Intermittent startup and grinding at times

Hi all,

My 02' Civic EX is having a very strange issue where sometimes when you turn the key nothing happens, or it will turn over once and stop, or it will crank right up. Rarely, there will be a grinding sound during startup which i would believe to be the starter grinding on the flywheel teeth. Any help would be appreciated, as I need my car to start reliably.

First things to do are the standard electrical checks.......

But I'll GUESS you need a starter.

Inspect the teeth of the ring gear for grinding damage. If there is a lot of damage, then you have a whole bunch of work to do.

would it be possible that maybe it is just loose and that would cause the cables to not have good connections, and that the gears aren't lining up right which would cause the grinding?

If you think that's a possibility, I'll suggest you grab some wrenches/voltmeter/test light, and dig into it to find out if you are right.

I can only guess from where I sit, and I already guessed you need a starter.
