My friends car is missing an EGR Valve
My friends car is missing an EGR Valve
I am considering buying my sister's boyfriend's 2001 Civic LX but he told me it has some oil leaking. I youtube'd this problem and stumbled upon this video :
I realized when I looked under the hood of my friends car, that the entire EGR Valve piece was missing. It is as if someone had pulled it out and never put it back in.
Is this something serious/expensive to replace? Is there anything else that may have been affected? New to these forums by the way, any help would be appreciated!
EDIT: I also remember hearing my friend say that he is missing the cap for the coolant reservoir. This may explain the oil leak and nasty smell? After doing some research, I found that the radiator could be damaged as well as a result of the missing coolant reservoir cap.

Re: My friends car is missing an EGR Valve
I doubt it is "missing". It would make some serious noise if it wasn't there along with a check engine light. The D17a1 doesn't have it. That is an a2 in the video. What model is it, ie lx, dx, etc?
If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

Check this thread https://www.civicforums.com/forums/1...ml#post4651958, there's a catalog link in it.
Or search, this has been covered in the forum several times in the past.
HTH
EDIT: That video covers the replacement rather well.

Re: My friends car is missing an EGR Valve
The cap mentioned is the one that plugs the cam hole where a distributor used to go. Since the D17 went to a distributorless system, the simple fix by Honda was to plug the cam hole with a plastic cap that has an o-ring on it. It is a very common source for a very slight oil leak, and is very simple to replace as pointed out in that video.
