Gears grinding while shifting
Gears grinding while shifting
Hi there, I have the following problem on my 2002 Civic LX Coupe Manual:
When I upshift or downshift with the clutch fully in I can feel resistance while shifting INTO a gear. If I hold the shifter near this resistance point I can feel gears grinding. It doesn't sound OR feel as bad as a full gear grind but I can feel the vibration from it.
Some other notes:
Any advice is greatly appreciated as i'm lost as to what it could be.
Regards,
-Mat

Some other notes:
- This doesn't occur when my car is stopped
- This occurs less at lower speeds
- I can't feel slippage in my clutch, but unsure
- When my clutch is fully depressed it does not make any noises except for a small squeak while pushing it in (guessing due to water)
- Double clutching doesn't fix the issue
- At high RPM's my shifter vibrates as well
Any advice is greatly appreciated as i'm lost as to what it could be.
Regards,
-Mat

The smaller cylinder (i'm guessing clutch fluid) is kinda low, but within acceptable limits. Any further advice?
Thanks.
Re: Gears grinding while shifting
Added some dot3 fluid and that didn't help
Here's a pic of the fluids

Re: Gears grinding while shifting
You need to check the transmission fluid level. There is a bolt on the back of the transmission that has a square insert for a tool. You need to remove that and stick your finger in it and see if you can feel the fluid. I'll see if I can find a pic
Re: Gears grinding while shifting
I would start by bleeding the clutch master and slave cylinders. A lot of times when the clutch is not releasing all the way the synchronizers will mask the problem by keeping the gears from grinding but making it harder to engage the gear.
Bleeding the clutch system is cheap so it is one of the first things I would do. Just adding fluid will not solve the problem if the system needs to be bled. The down side is people seem to have problems doing it so I would read up on it first.

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

Re: Gears grinding while shifting
That clutch reservoir that is "kinda low": That fluid had to go somewhere.
Check if the rubber boot on the slave cylinder is holding a bunch of fluid.
If that boot is well sealed and can't let leaking fluid dribble out, it can push the slave piston deep into its bore and cause insufficient travel when you push the pedal (and the pedal "feels lower" than it should).
