Headlight cover replacements

I bought new headlight covers for a 2004 civic I'm giving my daughter for her 16th birthday. Can anybody tell me the easiest way to put new headlights on this car. I want to make sure she has the safest car possible. The old ones are all fogged and scratched, otherwise mechanically and bodywise the car is in great condition. Thanks for any help recieved.

Re: Headlight cover replacements

-remove the front bumper (probably about 14 or so bumper clips and 4 screws)
-remove the (i'm assuming) 4 bolts holding the headlight in place
-remove all electrical connections on headlight; now your headlight is able to be removed.
-installation is reverse of removal.

I have an 02, and I can only assume the procedure on the 04 you're working on is nearly identical. From start to finish, I can swap out headlights in probably 30 minutes.
I'm just not 100% sure of the actual details of the procedure because Honda introduced a facelift on 04-05 models. You'll be paying a pretty penny (>$300) for brand new Honda OEM headlights, but you can probably find some quality aftermarket OEM replacements for just over $100/set.

Re: Headlight cover replacements

On an 04

Light fixture - There are 3 bolts, and 1 pop in clip securing it

1 bolt on the top of the light..., 1 on the side of the light..., and 1 going into the front (next to the grill)

Then there is 1 plastic pop in clip (looks similar to a plastic bolt, but pops in instead of screwing in)

Its located on the top of the light where the bracket attaches to the fender

Bumper; To remove the bumper there are 16 pop in clips (at least I think 16), and 2 screws

12 pop in clips underneath (note 2 should be longer than the others, make note and replace them back in the same holes)

4 pop in clips holding the grill area (directly under the hood)

And 2 screws - one in each of the front fender well - located where the bumper attaches to the fender (again 1 in each wheel well)

Once all these clips/ screws are removed..., you'll need to somewhat yank the bumper loose out of the retaining clips

And may need to smack it back into the clips when re-installing

Don't forget to align the lights once replaced

Re: Headlight cover replacements

Thanks guys for the help. This is going to make this project a lot easier. After reading this i went out and looked for those pop in clip you were talking about. Evidently he had the bumper cover off once before and either lost the clips or was too lazy to put them on. He has those wire ties on either side of the bumper holding the cover on. All I have to do to take the cover off is clip those ties. I don't know if he was a genius or an idiot but I think in the interest of safety and fit and finish I'll put the original clips pack in. Since the originals are gone does anybody have any idea what two holes those long clips fit into. My gut tells me probably in the center but sometimes it's just a belly ache. Again thanks for the help. I'n lucky i have a garage which should help with the headlight aiming. I paid $75 for both headlights and I got new bulbs with them for free off ebaby. They look to be original in both fit and finish. By the time I get done cleaning and polishing this car I don't know if I'll be able to give it up and might have to find her another care since I live in California and drive a Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Re: Headlight cover replacements

Actually, zip ties to hold the bumper on isn't terrible. Those pop clips are notorious for breaking, and they're unreasonably expensive if you buy them from a dealership or authorized dealer site (I'll list some of those at the end of this post). List price on those things are $3.50 a piece. There was a point in time where I had just 4 of those clips holding my bumper on (absolutely none on the bottom, just the 4 on the radiator cover portion). Really, anything to keep it from flopping around in the wind will suffice.

So, those authorized dealer sites. I'm just gonna put these here in case you need some Honda OEM parts to replace. These prices will be significantly cheaper than buying from a dealership, and that's even after including shipping costs. Since you're in Cali, you'd probably be best off searching hondapartscheap.com (South Bay Honda, ships out of Los Gatos) or Hondapartsunlimited.com (Showcase Honda, out of AZ). A third place that's pretty good to order from is hondaautomotiveparts.com (Majestic Honda), and they ship out of Rhode Island. Even if you don't end up ordering anything from any site, they have basically any diagram you'd need for parts reference.

I'm in Vegas, and I've ordered from all three of those sites. Every order from South Bay Honda shipped pretty slow. Majestic Honda was a bit better at shipping speeds, but understandably so, since they're on the opposite end of the country. Showcase Honda, however, always got my stuff to me within 3-4 days of me placing my order.

Anyways, I'll get off my soapbox now. If you have any more questions regarding the Civic, feel free to post up.

Might try here

The two longer are on the outer sides underneath (where the underside plastic secures to the wheel well)

Like Rice said; Zip ties do work
