Won't drive in D4 but can reverse.

My sister has a 2003 Honda Civic LX automatic. She has owned the car for over 2 years and has never had any transmission issues no hard shifts, slips, or and trouble going into P,R,D,D3,D2. Today she went out to eat, car drove fine all the way there. When she left the car drove fine for about a mile then she said it started to jerk or hesitate while driving. She tried to make it home but half way her car just completely didn't want to drive while in D4/D3/D2, it reversed just fine but when put into drive it wouldn't move at all not inch forward with no brakes applied like all auto's do and when given gas the car would only rev up as if it was in neutral.

Had to get the car towed home and I began to inspect it. Shift linkage is good, transmission fluid was fine, checked all solenoids to make sure they were connected. Further inspection I noticed when I put it into reverse I felt the transmission change into reverse but when put into D4 it didn't change into D4, same thing for D3/D2. While in D4/3/2 it seemed like it wasn't in gear because it would roll backwards as if it was in neutral. For the past week her car started making a whining noise, it would get a little louder with gas and I was able to pinpoint it to the transmission area with work and school I forgot about it and a week later this happens. A quick google search and I found some people saying it was their torque converters.

So I drained the fluid and added new Honda ATF to see if that would help before I'd go deeper into finding the issue. Didn't help at all. Now Im thinking it's the torque converter that's the issue since she had that whining noise for about a week before this happened. But before I go out and spent money on one and time to do the job I wanted to confirm that's the issue by asking you guys. So could it be the torque converter? Or even worse the transmission itself? Or simply a solenoid? Sorry for the long post but really want to pinpoint the issue and not waste time and money. Thank you.

I plan on replacing:
Torque converter
ATF filter
New ATF
Rear main seal.

I really need some of your guys help/opinions. Today we finished replacing the torque converter.
Brand new torque converter w/ new O ring
New transmission seal and CV axle seals
6qts of Honda ATF
New rear main seal
New oil pan gasket
New oil/oil filter

Like previously stated in my first post the car wouldn't move in D4 and was very weak in reverse and ended up not moving in reverse before we pulled the tranny and the loud whining noise coming from the tranny which got louder as the rpm climbed. Well after all that we replaced we started the car up and the whining noise was still there but very quiet, the atf was foaming on top where the dipstick goes. About a minute passed and the foam was gone along with the noise. Checked the fluid level and it was good so we turned the car back on and put it into d4 it started to move then we put it into reverse and it moved also. Put it back into park and back down to D4 it went right back to not moving and only revving while I gave it gas. Turned off the car checked the fluid and for any leaks but all was good to go. Turned back on still did the same of not wanting to move car stayed on for about 5 minutes then when put back into D4 it began to move again but again started to not move and just rev. Could it be a solenoid? Or does the tranny just need to be rebuilt?

So you actually took the trans apart and replaced the ATF internal filter? The whining is probably due to lack of fluid pressure because of a clogged filter. Check the video out below. The guy's great at explaining individual components and gives explanations along the way as to why the trans would stop moving forward as he tears it down.

I'd say you're looking at buying a Honda reman or breaking the trans completely down and replacing all associated components such as o-rings, clutch packs, filter etc.. If you're going to DIY it you might as well go all the way and do a complete rebuild if you're capable of it.
