01 Civic LX Steel Oil Pan Gasket little metal rings - wth?
I had to get an aftermarket pan gasket (not proud, don't ask). In the past I've put the 14 little metal rings that go around the gasket into the parts of the gasket that show a groove where the ring would fit. This gasket only had 4 grooves and I couldn't remember where to put the other ones so I only put 4 in. The service manual is silent on these little rings.
What the heck are those for? Why are there 14? Do you need them? Where to they go? If so, why don't they show up on the gasket picture or the pan picture? Are these the reason that my gasket always seems to leak no matter what I do?
Any help is appreciated.

If they are what I'm thinking of, those rings were embedded into the original pan gasket and were supposed to keep you from completely squashing and ruining the new gasket when you overtightened the bolts. A spacer, of sorts.
New OEM pan gasket would have the same rings embedded into the gasket. If you don't find and remove all of the old rings from the studs, they WILL cause the new one to leak. Yes, I have done it. (I also recognized immediately what was wrong when the person in the next bay made the same mistake.)
Flat surface (pan) must mate to flat surface (block), with only a gasket between them. However that gasket is made, that's the only thing that is supposed to be between those flat surfaces.
Throw out those extra rings you found. That's probably why yours keeps leaking. Pay attention to torque specs.
