Rep Power: 0 Just installed a new fuel pump. Now hard to start.
I own a 2001 Honda Civic DX w/automatic transmission and with 180,000 miles on it.
My throttle response was bad and I had some engine vibration at idle, so I decided its probably fuel pressure related.
I replaced the fuel pump, filter screen, and the fuel pressure regulator.
This improved my performance nicely, the shaking at idle is gone, and the car runs very nice now except now it is hard to start!
Car used to start right up as soon as I turned the key. Now, it takes 2 to 5 seconds of turning before it catches and then runs fine. No CEL's.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,
Steve

See if there are any stored codes anyways. You can have a DTC with no CEL. I recently (yesterday) noticed my car was sluggish with no CEL. Scanned it and a P1129 code was being thrown. Then I found out my MAP sensor connection wasn't locked in place.. Unplugged it, cleaned it out, and plugged it in best I could. Still didn't give me that reassuring click, but wouldn't come out if I pulled it. That solved my problem. Could be a similar case with yours. If not, I got nothin.

I replaced the MAP sensor like 6 months ago.

I'm not saying yours is a MAP sensor issue. You just may have a stored code without a CEL which could help diagnose what's wrong. Sorry if that was unclear.

My MAP sensor was cracked. I replaced it with a new one. Car started right up after 2 crank rotations. Drove it for a couple of miles and the throttle seemed much more responsive.
After letting it sit for a 1/2 hour it was hard to start again.
Turn the key and it turns over and over and then after 5 to 6 seconds of cranking it starts.

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one
Re: Just installed a new fuel pump. Now hard to start.
Obtain a fuel pressure gauge.
Connect gauge
Place gauge where you can see it from the drivers seat. (I have taped it to the windshield and driven like that.)
See what the fuel pressure is doing during the time period that the engine won't start.
Also note if fuel pressure is retained after the engine is shut off, and for how long it holds this residual pressure.

Fuel pump access rubber gasket was damaged. Replaced it.
