Possible Tranny problems?

I was at a drive threw ordering to eat for lunch.
I finished the order and started to attempt to pull forward.
The engine reved up but I didn't go anywhere.
I attempted to do it again and again, the third time my car actually got to the window.
I received my food and attempted to drive away.
It continued to happen.
I worked my way to a parking spot. Shut the car off. Let it sit for a minute. Turned it back on and it worked just fine. I drive a 2005 civic lx special edition. It has an automatic transmission with a bonestock d17a1 (non-vtec). Everything about the car is stock. If it is the transmission, I want to do a transmission swap, how hard is it to do and how much should I expect to spend if my friend and I are to do it ourselves? Thank you for your time.

Re: Possible Tranny problems?

My transmission did a similar thing just prior to throwing a P0740 code which, as far as I found, and I tried many things, was the tranny death toll. I bought a Syncrotech transmission for around $1K but don't know what they run now. I had to pay for shipping but if I recall I got most back after I returned the core. I saved myself much money on the shipping by sending it to a UPS freight center and picking it up in my minivan instead of having it sent to my residence.

Depending on your experience level it's tough to give a solid "easy" or "hard" on the swap. This was the biggest job I'd done on a vehicle but I'd (successfully) done many other jobs prior and learned many hard lessons. You would need to either take the transmission out the top along with the engine or out the bottom with a transmission jack. To remove it from the bottom you have to remove the subframe. Out the top, out the bottom, tastes great, less filling, Chevy, Ford, not sure what to tell you. I did the top because I figured a shop crane (~200$) would be more handy than a transmission jack and the $$ was about the same. There are many tips that you can get from this forum and other forums that will help you significantly.

All that said, what is your experience level? Mine is about where I state - no amateur, no professional, but I am a hobbyist and most of my work is on my DD only. Search under my name on this forum and honda-tech and you will find most of my information from my changeout. There are guys on these forums that could do this job with one hand tied behind their back.

If you do the top method and don't have a shop crane I would figure you'd spend $1500 because you'll probably do other stuff (e.g. engine mounts, etc). Out the bottom would be less because you would just do the tranny.

Re: Possible Tranny problems?

Go to a pull and pay. I paid 250 for my manual tranny and had it installed for 220
