CV joint?

Hello, I have a potentially sweet deal for a 2004 Civic but I have to make up my mind asap. I don't really have time to do proper research and tests.

There is a loud clunking(louder than clicking) noise coming from the passenger side. I's most prominent under acceleration in 2nd and 3rd gear. It sounds a lot like a CV, but it doesn't make the noise at low speed when it fully turn the steering. In my experience bad CVs always make most noise at low speed while steering.

Any idea if this can be something more serious? Thanks.

could be many things,

keep in mind that the transmission is on the passenger side of the car,

i would not buy the car in this condition without getting this diagnosed first

It could be your compliance bushing on the lower control arm. They are a common problem and will make a clunking sound while driving. You can really notice it going over a speed bump.

It's on the front part of the lower control arm and would look something like the picture below if it were torn.

But like mikey1 said, I wouldn't buy it either unless you had somebody very knowledgeable on these cars look it over. Who knows what else is wrong with it.

Re: CV joint?

Denitely not a bushing. It's a fast clunk under acceleration.

I totally overlooked the fact that the transmission is on the right side. I am used to longitudinal engines.

Front engine mount which is mounted to the trans? Another common failure.

is the noise consistent with the speed of the vehicle?

is the sound worse when going over a bump?
