2005 Civic EX oil consumption
2005 Civic EX oil consumption
Hey guys,
I have an '05 Honda Civic EX with around 140,xxx on the clock. I drive the car around 150 miles a day, during the summer this will drop because I split time with my R1. Car has AT, all the recommended preventative maintenance etc, and I run Mobil1 synthetic oil.
My problem is that I am going from fresh, clean, and full oil to engine light going on and vtech struggling to pull oil about 1400-1900 miles into the oil change. There is no visible leak, either from smoking or on the ground, and I have no idea whats going on. I found a thread about Accords suffering from this very issue so I checked the exhaust and found that it was coated in thick, greasy black soot like material. I should also add that I just had to change my Cat out because it became so bogged down.
I have read that on the Accord the problem is on some kind of piston seal, does anyone here have any information on this issue? I am trying to decide if the car is worth fixing based on cost versus value, and if I fix it if I am better off swapping the motor out.
Thanks guys!

on the back of ur head on the left side is your vtech solenoid pull it off and inspect and clean and you can find some pretty good you tube clips showing you how to do this and what codes are you pulling on ur car
If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

The cheapest thing for you to do is to check the oil regularly and add a quart of oil whenever it needs it. Check it every time you get gas.
You can buy an awful lot of oil for the price of an ring job or an engine job.....but oil will eventually contaminate the cat.
Do the spark plugs show any telltale signs of oil burning? One plug? All?
PCV ok?
The usual consumption issue I see the most is the oil control rings get stuck due to carbon buildup, mostly from the oil used.
Once the oil has been run very low, the parts of the engine that rely on splash lubrication (rings) can be compromised and their wear accelerated, thus consuming even more oil at a faster rate from that point on.
A used engine will be a crapshoot.
For oil rings that are simply stuck, my usual recommendations are in this post: https://www.civicforums.com/forums/1...ml#post4627238

You might browse this thread too, see the parts where we talk about soaking the cylinders and Cadillacs: https://www.civicforums.com/forums/2...t-exhaust.html
