what antifreeze?
what antifreeze?
So my car has green antifreeze in it now. Had it when I bought it. Isnt blue oem?
Can I use the universal stuff? Why does honda say you have to use their stuff? Is there an actual mechanical engineering reason?

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

Re: what antifreeze?
Honda only started using the blue colored coolant as a factory fill around 2004-ish, if I recall correctly.
Checked: July 04 Service News announced the new coolant as a factory fill.
There is no such thing as a "universal coolant" no matter what the mouth breathers at the parts stores try to sell you. Not these days.
There is as much engineering that goes into antifreeze as anything else in the cars these days (not so much with Honda in particular, but in general).
Hondas coolant is Long Life, regular Ethylene Glycol, Non-Borate, Non-Silicate formula.
Premixed, so you don't have to worry about mixing your own water.
Asian manufacturers tend to consider Silicates to be an abrasive.
Europeans like it though.

From what I hear the other brands have silicates or something like that that could hurt seals.. For a few more bucks a gallon I think you save your self a HUGE headache..or maybe I am just drinking the cool aid..
Edit.. Didnt see Ezones post..but what he said about the silicates is more then likely ture, not the first time I read it on here..

Re: what antifreeze?
Hmm.... even prestone no longer uses silicates in most of their coolants, no matter what colour (<Canadian!!!) the coolant is. But.. alas.. I am on the bandwagon also. Why spend 7 dollars less when OEM coolant lasts damn near forever.
