Check engine light....2003 Civic - Manual Transmission - Stock

Hi,
I bought a 2003 Civic LX Manual car about a week ago. I bought it from a used car dealership and has no warranty on it. it has 148k miles. I am still learning to drive stick shift. This car was checked before I bought it. It was inspected before the car could be registered. I still have the temp plates.
So today I was practicing clutch balancing on a parking lot that has a steep hill. I had it on the first gear and suddenly it stalled on me. So I pressed the clutch and the brakes in to re-start the car. The brakes wouldn't apply and the car started rolling backwards. I quickly applied E-Break. Then I pressed the cluch and the main break in and the car wont start. It tried to make the ignition but the car won't start. So I waited for few seconds and tried to start the car again. It didn't work.
After I tried like 3 times the car finally started. After about 5 seconds the check engine light came on. I left it about 10 seconds and turned the car off. Then left it about 10 seconds and turned it back on. It started fine, but the check engine light stayed on.
After that I drove it for about 10 minutes with the check engine on, and turned the car off. I left it off for about 2 minutes and then started the car back on. Then the check engine light went off.

Does anyone know why it happened. Can any one give me an insight as to why the check engine light stayed on for like 10 minutes and then went off?

I was thinking about something wrong with the starter motor since it didn't start when I tried 3 times, or the brakes because the main brake system failed when the car stalled.

- Thank you

Go to autozone, pep boys, etc., and get the code read. Even if the light went out, the code should still be stored. Let us know what that code is and we can help diagnose the problem

i would be more concerned about the brake failure then the check engine light....have them checked asap, do not drive the vehicle until you do so

I'm not sure what you mean by "clutch balancing" but if it is using the partially engaged to hold the car on the hill, you will be buying a new clutch very soon.
