shifter rattle in 5th gear

as i was driving home tonight i heard a rattle that i dont think i had heard before. i was able to figure out that it was coming from the area around the shifter. i could stop the rattle by holding the shifter, but i could still feel it vibrating. i could also stop the rattling by pushing the clutch in so the car was in neutral. i tried shifting into 4th and there was no rattle. the rattling was happening when i was going 60-70mph. i didnt get any slower or faster at the time, so i dont know if it would have continued or not. later on though when i was going 45-55 i didnt hear the rattle anymore. i dont know exactly when it stopped because i had the radio loud enough that i couldnt hear it anymore. anyone else have this rattle, or could this be a sign of a real problem?
