so if its not going into gear, if its slipping, difficult or delayed shifting. Grinding gears or loss of power. Loss of drive then you have the infamous defect from worn clutches

Ezone refrenced about Transmission range switch. to find in my civic 2002 ex, remove the passenger front tire, and you will see it mounted behind the wheel.

When does Shift solenoid amongst all of this come into play here? all above problems refrenced lead to shift solenoid which is external to transmissions.

Is there anyway to find out just by doing TESTS, if clutches are ok. I have no CEL indicating any tranny issues but i feel it when driving.

if engine light is off, its more than likely a small mechanical issue. and no you cannot check the clutches without opening the trans, but i guarantee one or more will have abnormal wear if you have slipping. the range switch would only be a problem if the shifter is not selecting the correct gear. for example if you put it in D and the gauges say youre in N and the car doesnt move, thats a range switch issue.

by engine light u mean Check engine light!!!..No its not off just yet!!!.. did come back since last post. what kind of tests would you perform to check for slippage on transmission?A tranny shop gave me 3rd gear readings in 30-35psi, is that clutch pressure readings.Other gears seemed normal. I like to think my slippage is normal/expected for a 177k mi car. I am working on getting trans fluid changed again and i sorta expect to get normal rides from it.Done it once before (trans fluid change) and drives so much better. I am only afraid of giving more gas while driving/accelerating for it sometimes disengages and throws back a jerk before changing gears from starting off a rest position at a signal light into giving gas and accelerating.Its more like difficult or delayed shifting!!!!!.It will eventually falls into gear but the feeling you get for not falling in place so quickly is intimidating to me.

The shifter is indeed selecting the correct gear, so trans switch isnt necessary i guess. Gearbox would you think SHIFT SOLENOID would do any good here?

I guess first gear, if it means when starting/accelerating your car from signal stop and accelerating it has a long delay falling into the next gear and then once its into gear (which is after a long long time, it makes that racing car noise before falling into gear; its revving up revving up and then falls into gear)then all gears after that are going fine. (barely noticable slipping into later gears).
I still wouldn't go past 60m/hr ride. My rpms max out at 3k.
During delayed shifting its between 2k-2.5k
Also if i drive in/within 20-30mi/hr falling into gear is a non-issue. Its when i wanna race the car (from the point where the signal light turns green and i zoom zoom zoom my car becoz someone else is behind me and wants me to rush it and wants me to accelerate it so its not holding him up and having to slow down by the person following me).
I do not for now have a trans code on CEL. but there are other O2 sensor and Map sensor codes.

yeah if your rpms are revving for a second like its in neutral when it should be shifting gears, that means its slipping. the more rpms it slips, the worse off you are. 500 rpms may be fine for a while, but anything more and your trans is about dead. shift solenoids really wouldnt make a difference, the slipping is from clutch discs caused by lack of friction material (due to excessive and abnormal wear). our trans are especially weak so this happens sooner on our cars than it would under normal conditions on other cars.

I'd like to say it was so much worse before when i had never ever changed transfluid. I had to push & pull off from gas pedal just so it would fall inito gear.
After Valvoline DercMax transfluid change and having driven close to about 200mi, i have felt considerable difference in smoothness of the drive. Before, it wouldnt even attempt to fall into gear, after putting in the Valvoline TransFluid its atleast showing improvement.
I am waiting on another valvoline transfluid change today (3 quarts) and will drive that for another 200mi and see if it makes significant changes in gears slipping. I am very hopeful that will take care of the slipping problem.
This transfluid change will be my second in a month. I plan on using the Honda DW-1 ATF for my final transfluid change if i see improvement in slipping.
Do you gearbox recommend this final one to be honda dw1 transfluid change?
still stay with Valvoline.

I had to push & pull off from gas pedal just so it would fall inito gear.I am still doing that now!!!! trying to know how long this will have to go on? really tired of it.
Tried doing the transfluid change today however, the bolt just couldn't be opened with an ordinary tool!!!!. (a3/8).

i would stick with maxlife atf and do at least 3x drain and fills to get majority of the honda stuff out. there is no comparison and i would not go putting full synthetic dw1 in an older trans unless you really want problems. the maxlife is already the best fluid you can put in there and will only help keep it running longer. the shifts are smoother, and the fluid warms up and starts working faster (lower viscosity = thinner). and it has a much longer life.

Its why gearbox i have valvoline dercmax in my tranny, there never really was HONDA transfluid in the transmission before valvoline dercmax, and i just ran that thought of using Honda Trans just in case it was soemthing i had to do to maintain it.
I have driven 200+ mi so far, however, i am really concerned about slipping when driving for long distances at one time with my car (50+ mi one way) for i am afraid to put lots of gas on the pedal and run it.
My car also requires that it will drive very nice if there is no interruptions (like having bumper to bumper traffic) and stop and go conditions for my car begins to shake a lot when at idle or moving real slowly with my a/c on.
Every few hundred miles requires a new coolant fill; its frustrating.

Hi all, sorry to bump into this. I have an 05 EXi with delayed transmission from gear 1 to 2. This doesn't happen everytime, it is always fine in the morning and happens in the afternoon. The gear doesnt shift until rmp reaches 4k then the other gears shift normally. I have the check engine light on and sometimes it flashes and shakes the engine. Did i mention i am in Nigeria? Ok out here we dont have alot of mechanics with the proper device to check the codes but i managed to find one and he said all my cylinders are misfiring and also a bad 02 sensor. My question is, what has misfire and bad 02 sensor got to do with transmission. Please advise me. Thankx

Even though you are in Nigeria the summers seems exactly the same here in texas v/s nigeria. Yes i can very well relate exactly to the issues you are having. In mornings, it drives really fine but putting 70+ mi later it shows signs of slipping.(delayed shifting).

I have done two Transfluid changes to my car so far and one final tranfluid change is due within the next week. I truly believe that changing tranyfluid has made a significant difference so far.
I did change both O2 Sensors and quite honestly its not a smooth ride just yet.
I am thinking of changing the cat converter on mine (somehow i find that its welded on my car) Its a 03 civic ex 4dr car.

Yesterday after having driven thru local streets stopping and going long enough for abt 40mi I decided to take car on far distance another 40+ mi drive and i noticed the following:
It was around 4p & I cannot drive my car beyond 45+mi/hr on the freeway. If i try giving gas, it will throw back. If i ended up in traffic on the freeway i am in trouble for when changing first to second gear it will make that rattling in shifting before it falls into gear. i continuously have to take off and on my feet off the pedal. if i do that, car does continually move forward, but if i had it on pedal long long enough it will be stuck there and you can watch on the rpms and it doesnt exceed 3400rpms.(sometimes). You find yourself stuck at driving the car on 45m/hr for a long long time.
After an hour and a half break, on my way back home, in during evening/late night time while driving on freeway i was able to drive the car for 60m/hr speeds and did not see the need to exceed 70mi/hr.So it appears that as long as the car is driving consistently in speed without interruptions the car runs quite smoothly but if there are breaks on the freeway or local streets it has issues shifting gears, for you have to contantly change gears now and then. when at rest, i start the car and put foot on brakes and move shifter to all the gears once or twice in the day. I am told after transfluid change it helps thin out the transfluid by doing that.

Also, the gas consumptions under these circumstances is HUGE..i finished off $15 gas very very fast (4.2 gallons) in barely 80mi of driving. wierd but true.

I do have the Oxygen sensor code and a Vaccum Leak Code on my car (P1505). I changed the A/c fan yesterday for it was putting a heavy load on my engine when A/c was on and at signal lights when a/c on it would idle rough. the A/c fan so far seems to have solved the hot pointer on gauge to go beyond half mark but not exactly changed the A/c load on engine while driving. It still feels a little load and needs shutoff when in heavy traffic and idling.

I am seriously suspicious of my exhaust/cat system taking away a lot of gas mileage. I took it into meineke & guy was talking about changing HEAT SHIELD near the engine. The exhaust looked good to him. It rough idles when stopping at signal lights or in heavy traffic.

This all happened after a second valvoline max transfluid change and 100+ mi. driving.still shifting wierd.

In city streets its 1500rpms and on highways about 3400rpms.It does indeed change gears but delayed for sure.

sounds like a failing a/c compressor that is putting drag on the engine, altho you seem to have quite a few other issues as well. maxlife fluid wouldnt cause these problems and in fact a year after switching, my car needs less gas pedal than before to keep the car moving. its a thinner fluid and gas mileage should be better if you have no other problems. rough idle and poor power can also come from a torn engine mount.

Need help ASAP I have 95 hatch with a d16y5 from a 98 hx with a ex tranny I do believe anywho the trans never gave me problems on the last swap I had I have a brand new complete clutch kit slave cylinder and everything's and it seems to be slipping daily after I drive about 10 minutes or so it'll shift fine then when it gets warmed up almost impossible to shift into first and second an difficult for third fourth an fifth need hello think the clutch needs adjusting or the trans is going I'm clueless and only have 300 miles on the new rebuild help please!!!
