7th gen civic HX with EX head and cam??
7th gen civic HX with EX head and cam??
Little background on the car, I bought an 03 civic hx with a blown motor for a commuter car. After taking the motor apart, I found the cam bolt had backed off the cam skipping timing, breaking the cam gear and cam as well as seizing the cam in the head.
So searching around, I could not find a HX head or cam anywhere. Did some research and found from my readings the difference is the cam and 10 hp. More research led the solenoid etc. is controlled by the ecu and putting a ex cam in hx shouldn't be an issue.
So on to now, I found an ex head with cam and gear. Rebuilt it put it in, car runs great for the most part. I am throwing 0420 I replaced upstream 02 sensor and am now waiting for a 02 simulator to take care of that issue.
My problem now is every once in awhile the car will not rev past 4k (limp mode) Oil level is full, vtec solenoid screen is new not clogged. I replaced the pressure sensor on the solenoid and it still hits that artificial rev limit. Im at a loss, I know nothing more than that as I bought the car not running. Since I am using an ex head/cam am I in need of an ex ecu or what the hell am I missing? I am at a loss with this damn car and can not figure out why its doing this. I have checked everything replaced everything I can possibly think of.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 7th gen civic HX with EX head and cam??
I had a similar issue and learned from my non-mechanical neighbor one can go to Autozone for free to see what code it is throwing. It wound up being a bad map sensor and O2 sensor. Mostly it was the MAP causing the limp mode. It was $40 part then. I got my car tuned and if it is the map sensor in your case, I have a couple stock ones that I cannot use anymore as it is boosted and has different needs. I still have the receipt. Also thinking about what you said and guessing, your CAM POSITION sensor might be hurt as you mentioned the damage. I might only have 1 spare of those. The stock map sensors I have no use for whatsoever. I have a 6th gen intake on now.

The cams are different!
14111-PMP-A00 CAMSHAFT HX
14111-PLR-000 CAMSHAFT EX
The ECU's are different. One thing I noticed is I do not see ABS for HX. That could contribute to it.
Best of luck!
