01 Civic EX - Trying To identify & Fix the problem

Hello, im new to these forums, as well as honda's. Ive read the manual, ive done some research, and i have went out and bought the Haynes Repair Manual.

I recently bought a civic ex, 2 dr standard. I pretty much tought myself how to drive it in a weeks time and got good at it, many test drove it for me and said it run perfect so i bought it.

Around the 2nd day of driving it i didnt see a bump as was going a little too fast and ever since then there has been a noise i still cant completely describe. It almost sounds like a fan when i release the clutch into 2nd gear and gas. it makes the sound mostly while on the gas peddle.
**Edit: it will occasionally make the sound in first if i have been driving a few miles without letting it sit. (i commute about 50-80miles per day) if that helps **

I had the mechanic next door to my work look at it and he said it sounds like my transmission bearings are bad. But he didn't even drive it, it only makes the sound while driving. (thinking he just wants the money)

At auto zone while buying the repair manual he suggested it was a "shift leakage bushing"

In the book it suggests a faulty bearing or a fork shaft improperly installed.

Overall the car runs perfect, it doesn't affect the cars performance that ive noticed, it just really bugs me to no end, especially when i can hear it and others can hear it while im driving. (kind of embarassing lol)

Any suggestions or others with the same problem, any help would be appreciated i dont want to tear down the whole car to find the problem if someone knows. Also if there are threads that could help me that ive missed please let me know

Thank you

*EDIT**
It sounds like a waaaa, or a raaaaa sound

So the noise goes away when you step on the clutch?

That does sound like a transmission bearing, probably the input-shaft bearing, a common Honda problem.

It's weird that it only does it in 2nd gear though.

Pop the hood and get someone to push the clutch in and out and listen for a noise around the transmission (left side).

If it's an ISB you'll hear it at idle when the clutch is out, then go away when you push on the pedal. It will be much quieter than when you're driving.

It's probably the bearing(s). My first and second gears have made the same noise for 5 years now. If you can stand the noise drive it till it breaks cause it's $$$ for a re-build.

ive realized its not just in second, and thats what the guy at autozone who had a honda said. he called it a shift rod bearing instead of a input-shaft bearing. is it the same thing just differant termonology? or differant.

Also is it somthing i can do myself or would it be worth more to just take it to a mechanic to do it?

Re: 01 Civic EX - Trying To identify & Fix the problem

The input-shaft bearing is inside the transmission, some people call it a main-shaft bearing. I've never heard it called a shift rod bearing...

The transmission will have to be removed and taken apart, it won't need a full rebuild unless you want it. If all you replace is the bearing it's not that big of a job for someone who knows what they're doing.

If it's not real loud it's okay to drive, it may last years. My ISB has been noisy for about a year now and hasn't gotten much worse, I plan on replacing it when my clutch goes. If it's real loud and a grinding noise I'd be weary. If it does go it'll most likely destroy the trans and possibly lock up the wheels which could be bad.

Ok, well i appreciate your time and help on this subject, i will be asking for quotes on this job. This might seem like a ridiculous question but if you replace your transmission does it replace the rob and bearings as well? Mainly because i was looking into putting a new transmission in it somtime this year.
