03 civic ex Sedan Lacks Acceleration
03 civic ex Sedan Lacks Acceleration
I have a Honda Civic 2003 with 1.7 liter vtec ENGINE AND 4 Cylinders with 175,000 miles on it , my check engine light came on and ever since i have problems with accelerating. I will put my foot on the gas and my car will kind of jerk like its trying to get gas but cant. This only happens if the car has been off for 10+ hrs. Also had tune up about 1 month ago so I know that shouldnt be the problem. After driving my car for 50+ miles, it stalls & won't accelerate past 20 MPH. It will kick in after a few seconds of stalling, but then doesn't accelerate again (I press on the gas and it does nothing!), the engine is still running. . I'll press the gas, and the car doesn't accelerate. Try to park in the reverse and the car may stop on its own and have to re-start. The RPMs drop down like I'm just coasting. Downshifting and flooring it doesn't help, then after about 5-7 seconds it'll start to go again. if I let off the gas and press again, the same thing happens. I have to at speeds of 40mph plus, take my foot of gas pedal and then let it run and then push it back and the car will begin accelerating, have to do this 2-3 times on the freeway becoz the car will most likely not exceed 45 miles an hour on the freeway when driving but doing this process 2-3 times while driving on the freeway picks up the speedometer to upto 60mph and it then runs smooth. I'll be at a stop sign, then turn and I'll be going 20 with the pedal all the way down for a little bit, then the whole car will jerk as the engine shifts and it finally speeds up. My car is running really weird at start up and wont accelerate. When i get to 20 mph my car won't accelerate, it is slow and draging. Why does it hesitate when i accelerate? It almost sounds like its about to shut off but doesnt and it shakes a bit. The jerks HAPPEN while I am driving and trying to increase my speed by giving more . Once my car gets going speed is not an issue. It seems that I have to push on the pedal just a bit more to get it to go. And after a few seconds of dumping gas in my engine it seems to respond USUALLY with a body-throwback jerk. My transmission was re-built completely at 159,000 mi and transmission oil has not been changed since. This re-built is a third re-build on this car.
i have done the folliowing with my car so far. CEL is still on as of 5/27/2012 and shows the following code P1129.
A MAP sensor was replaced
A spark Plug has been replaced in all coils/units
IAC valve has been cleaned and so is the Throttle Body
The upstream/downstream Oxygen sensors using NTK sensors has been installed.
The P1129 is a MAP code which has re-appeared after having installed the MAP sensor.
I am simply running out of options. Taking it to the dealership for a diagnostic on Engine and issues has come up with following suggestions
Lack of acceleration, chugging, hesitating, bogging etc. could be caused by one of the following below:
Possibilities: Inspect and test all the following listed below:
Oxygen sensor.
Catalytic converter.
Fuel injectors dirty/sticking.
Mass airflow sensor/Airflow meter.
Throttle position sensor.
Crankshaft position sensor
Knock sensor
Manifold absolute pressure sensor.
EGR Valve
Fuel pressure regulator leaking or defective fuel pump.
False air leakage.
Fuel contamination.
Foul/defective spark plugs.
Open spark plug wires.
Ignition coil/Coil packs defective.
Incorrect ignition timing.
Cap and rotor.
Most of these items have been done...HELP ME OUT HERE PLEASE. IM SIMPLY EXHAUSTEEEEEEDDDDDDDDDDD....about what to do?????

Re: 03 civic ex Sedan Lacks Acceleration
I am getting the following CEL Codes on my 2003 Honda Civic EX Sedan
P1129 (Map Higher than Expected)
P0730 (Faulty Shift Control Problem)
P0505 (IAC circuit condition higher/lower than expected)
(Vaccum Leak On Engine, Dirtry Throttle Body, IAC motor defective, Poor Electrical connection to the IAC valve)
P0141 (HO2S12 heater condition Bank1 Sensor 2).
Now ,understand these codes are not exactly as it appears in first on the machine.).
Now the downstream oxygen sensor,(P0141 code) and P1129(Map sensor) was installed 3 mos ago and those codes were cleared upon installation by taking off the battery.
About the code P0505 the IAC valve was only cleaned up and so was the IAC motor and its surroundings and not replaced with a new one. (its quite expensive for this car). all vaccum leaks were inspected/cleaned to make sure it did not have problems.
P0730 is transmission issue which was rebuilt about 13,000mi ago when it first appeared and it seems to have come back.
Lots of people suggest that CEL is first indication of where all the problems lie, i dont ever get it what to do once you have taken care of it and if it ever re-appears after having taken care of it.
Someone please help i simply cant afford going about from mechanic to mechanic suggesting so very many different options when following the CEL path with it codes i have nearly taken care of eveything the codes represents.
What more can be done now!!!!!!...

Re: 03 civic ex Sedan Lacks Acceleration
Take a look around the throttle position sensor. Is there oil on the sensor and the surrounding areas? If so replace the tps senor.
Your problem started with a MAP code. What was done prior to the car prior to that? Did it ever over heat? You could have a blown head gasket, look for oil in the antifreeze in the radiator. Then with the engine running look for bubbles in the antifreeze.

Re: 03 civic ex Sedan Lacks Acceleration
There is no oil around the throttle position sensor, however, just under the VTEC gasket there is enough leaks/oil spread out to be worrisome.
Before the Map Code, there was a TRANNY REBUILT DONE on the CAR.
No it did not overheat at that time. MAP sensor was installed by buying a new part and one of the codes shown on CEL signalled MAP sensor, and while it was the most affordable of all the codes shown, i started from there. (Cost $60 parts & labor) to have it done. got it installed, cleaned it and found out the idle/lack of acceleration problem was not exactly gone, thinking i have so much more of the CEL to take care off yet, i will be doing that soon. However, it was not until about 4 months after the MAP install that it has re-appeared on the CEL. Thats what makes me mad. It re-appeared when i did an IAC valve replacement and disconnected the battery and few days later had AutoZone check on my codes only to find that the IAC code was gone but MAP sensor code did re-appear on CEL.
