2003 Civic Did I get the timing belt tensioner on right?
I just finished installing a new timing belt ,water pump, all other belts, new tensioner etc.in our 2003 Civic with 1.7 engine it has 105,000 miles on it the belt showed some wear and cracks and was surely due for a change so I am glad I did it .When I installed the new timing belt tensioner I expected to have some sort of locating pin or stud to hold it in posistion but the tensioner mount was just a flat surface or "boss" and I could not find a way that the tensioner was "locked in place " . Well I went ahead and attached the tensioner spring and with a new longer bolt (supplied) I torqued it to 33 FP . I reassembled everything then and the engine runs GREAT
I drove it 1.5 miles to church this morning is all ! however I keep thinking about that tensioner ! Did I get it on there correctly ?
So I thought I would ask you guys before I drive very far .
THANK YOU ! you guys are the best ! Bob1942

You did it right if you:
-Put the spring that connects to the tensioner on (Thats kinda your locating pin)
-Pulled the grenade pin after the belt was on and everything was lined up
-The belt was tight after you pulled the grenade pin
I dont know why you had a longer bolt for the tensioner. Was it OEM?

after your quick reply.Yep I got the spring on correctly I am sure about that and pulled the grenade pin . The belt tightened up nice when I pulled the pin . Well about that bolt I did read somewhere that some civics had a shorter bolt and it should not be used however I did not compare the old bolt with the new bolt. On the box it says Honda genuine parts and on the bag the bolt was in is printed part # (14517-pmm-A02 ) the tensioner was made by GMB all parts are supposed to be Honda and I bought them as a complete kit from Amazon.com . easier than buying all the parts separately anyway Since the new bolt was in there I just went ahead and used it . I am now a happy camper
