Burning Oil
Burning Oil
I have 03 Honda civic si with 177,000km. The headgasket went on it which the tech told me that coolant was leaking by the gasket in cyl #3. I had that replaced along with timming belt around 130,000km. I've also had p300,p302 code which tells me that cyl 2 and 4 are misfiring. Check engine light disappeared but I investigated anyways thinking the coil packs needed to be replaced considering the plugs were changed not to long ago. Plugs were removed and noticed that they had a white residue leads me to believe they were overheated by the headgasket issue. I replaced them. Final issue is the car is burning oil. It burns over a liter every 1500 km's. Called Honda and service advisor said this is normal oil consumption from Honda Canada. I do notice that when I stump on the throttle I hear a ticking sound that comes and goes mostly around 3000rpm. Compression or leak down test hasn't been done yet.
Any suggestions? Do I need to rebuild the top end?

Re: Burning Oil
What kind of plugs were in it when you had the misfires? Honda's are picky, Denso and NGK's are the only plugs you can really use. Was there white residue on the firing end and the white ceremic that surrounds it? Or was it only white on the ground? The ground is the metal tab that sits above the firing end.
Here's a guide on how to read spark plugs:

A liter every 1500km isn't great but not terrible either, just keep oil in it. The ticking is probably the valves, did they adjust them when you had the head gasket replaced?

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

P0302 is cylinder #2 misfire.
Where did you come up with a #4 from that?
Have the valves been adjusted lately?

*Checks chart*

Ash deposits are usually from long term oil burning.
Did all 4 plugs show roughly the same amount of the ash?

Probably the rings. Even more likely if the engine got hot when the head gasket let go.
Certainly not the only possibility though. There are valve stem seals and other stuff too.
Hard to evaluate without visible smoke, and/or engine teardown.
If you could see blue smoke from the exhaust and tell what exact conditions it smokes under, that would go a long ways towards telling the most likely area that it comes from.
But the catalytic converter can hide a LOT of smoke.
I said rings-- thinking only of common issues, not physical damage like scored cylinder walls or out of round cylinders. Or improper/poor work when the head was off for the head gasket job. Anything is possible.

A compression test may help you spot problems, so do it.
A good result does NOT mean the oil rings still don't have a problem. A compression test does not check the oil control rings.
No idea on your noise without hearing it. Lots of possibilities. Loose valves? Cracked exhaust manifold? Rod bearings? Carbon buildup? Piston slap? I would need a whole lot more info.
