Timing belt: General advice

01 Civic 1.7L W/180K

I was just about to post this on CL for my parents when I noticed in the service history that the timing belt had been replaced without doing the tensioner or WP.

I figure that the WP could probably do 200K miles but do these tensioners make it that long? As I'm very surprised that it has not gone out yet.

usually they are okay, i know many dealers will not even suggest replacing the tensioner. its one of those things that is cheap insurance, but not really worth it if you already had the belt done. looks like its due for another service anyway in 20k miles.

Re: Timing belt: General advice

Its a gamble, but like gearbox said do it in another 20k or even less if you can. Not changing the tensioner is pointless if your doing the tb in my opinion. I heard of people change their tb and only a few hundred miles the tensioner takes a **** and its just as good as a broken timing belt.

Re: Timing belt: General advice

The job was done in 06 at around 100K.

I'm just trying to decide if it's worth doing as my parents are selling it. Either have the next guy take the gamble or drop a few hundred on it first.

OT: What's a good condition 01' HX blk on blk 5spd worth anyway? No accidents, almost mint. only issue is a 180K mile tensioner haha....

My dad claims 45, but I don't know how good his math is

They bought it since the HX had the best rating back in the day. They also had a sunroof professionally installed which idono if the HX ever came with one...

Re: Timing belt: General advice

They're pretty rare. That being said, they're going for $3500-5000 USD with that many miles. Judging by price, the 7th gen coupes aren't as popular as the sedans.

The timing belt is one of the first things a savvy buyer will ask about. If you then tell them it was just done you'll get near your asking price. You shouldn't have to pay more than $500 USD for a timing belt, tensioner, water pump.

Also, a nice coat of wax and a good detail job will go a long way.

Re: Timing belt: General advice

Looks like the parents just want to go ahead with it anyway. Only costs them parts since I will do the work.

This seams like the most reasonable priced kit: http://www.ebay.com/itm/01-05-CIVIC-...#ht_2211wt_922

Ive had good luck with GMB, getting genuine rebranded parts, or FCP has a pretty good kit for $113.

Looks good and that's a hella good price. Make sure the water pump gasket fits properly before you install it.
