Loud rattle in front end
Hi everyone, I was glad to find this forum and it has already given me loads of information.
Hopefully someone here can help me with this problem.
My problem is only and I mean ONLY when driving down a road going 15 mph or higher and it's rough or has a few bumps in it there is a LOUD metal to metal knocking sound somewhere in the front of the car.
It is like a rattle and (sorry for the sillyness) sounds like dug uh dug uh dug uh dug uh and lasts for a small time until the vibration stops and then the noise is gone until you hit more bumps or rough roads.
you can feel it through out the whole car and it's been there almost the entire life of the car.
It's not a higher pitched metal clangy sound either it is a deep solid metal sound so it's got to be two strong surfaces that are knocking together.
No one can find where it's at and since I can ONLY hear it when the vehicle is in motion I cannot find where it is.
Here is some history.
My Wife's car is a 2001 Honda Civic.
Is was bought new from a dealership and shortly after that maybe a month the rattle appeared. So, she took it back to the dealership which is a very long distance to drive and had the dealerships repair team look at it.
They reported that there was a "metal spur" in the strut attachments which they said they ground off and gave the car back to her.
The noise was quieter but never when away.
Since the noise was quieter and the dealership was really far away she never took it back (before she knew me lol) and this noise has been there ever since, slowly getting louder and louder until now it's seriously ridiculously loud when you hit a bump in the road.
I mean really alarming if you've never been in this car but it affects absolutely nothing in the performance of this car.
She drives it every day to her work and delivery jobs in town after work and never has any problems so I know it's something non-vital to the performance of the car otherwise it would have broken years ago.
I've checked a million times underneath the car pulling and pushing things and examining places where metal parts come into contact with each other looking for metal ware, looked at the steering and suspension, tried jerking the wheels and pushing on the sides of the car trying to recreate the rattle while the car is stationary and it never works, I cannot find anything loose.
What ever this noise is it needs a lot of force like a bumpy road driving at least 15 to 20 mph to happen.
I would give almost ANYTHING to find this and fix it but for the life of me I can't figure out how to do it.
Is there anyone here that has any insight on this at all?

Re: Loud rattle in front end
Check your catalytic converter heatshield. Also check your lower control arm bushings. I dont think it would make the sound you describe, but its worth a shot. Also check your motor mounts. Specifically the front one. I bet its broken.
