Power steering is hard.

This morning i drive my friend's 97' Civic (automatic) and i noticed that his power steering was a lot more easy to turn than mine, especially when the car was not moving. Why is my power steering harder? Can i do anything to make it smoother? Oh, i have a manual.

A '97 and a '01 Civic are 2 totally different cars. The powersteering does feel different in those 2. It's normal.

Manual tranny cars seem to have 'tougher' steering than their AT couterparts. Not really sure why this is or if it is intentional. Someone said once they though it was so when shifting you are less likely to jerk the wheel if it is stiffer. It could also be the fact that MT steering is tuned more for performance drivers and isn't as cushy.
I dunno, sounds good to me.

The point of having a manual transmission is to have more control of the car with the shifting, accelerating, braking, and of course steering. It's tough simply because if we had the steering of an automatic, most drivers would feel as if they'd have less control of the car... and with the steering from an automatic, the car would have more control of itself in certain situations (such as racing... cuz who would wanna race an automatic anyways? I mean you can, but not a Honda Civic.) The automatic 7th gens is the same... the steering is a dream of ease. I have a 5-speed, and it's tough. Funny how some reviewers did not like the steering for the new Civic... and that's BS when it's got great steering. But everyone's entitled to their own opinion...

Power steering however in the RSX Type S is nice and firm but I noticed it's not as tough as the Civic's 5-speed.

For the record... you can't change the steering... except drain the power steering fluid and make it twice as tougher. My power steering fluid canister busted when I hit a deer @75mph... I pulled over and turned the car off... then I turned it back on, and I had no power steering! Tough as hell!

Mine too, whenever I turn I hear a very loud, humming noise, and the steering becomes difficult. I've taken my car to the dealer 6 times and they keep on saying that the steering does indeed sound awkard, so they end up replacing the power steering pump with a new one, but after 2 weeks, the problem comes back. What should I do?

I don't know...I have a 5-speed but I still think my steering is too light. And I can see why car reviewers don't like the steering for two reasons. One being the steering wheel is way too big...it's like the wheel on a full size cargo van. The second being the steering lacks on center feel.
