Unhappy Stuck/intermittant tachometer

So my tach in my cluster will suddenly stop at a certain point and just stay there. Then sometimes I'll go over a bump and it will loosen it up and it will jump to the right point and work for a little while until it's okay again. When I shift into N, it will usually take the tach 2 or 3 seconds to go down to 1000 rpms (running not in gear) I've researched some and I'm thinking maybe it's a loose ground wire? Not sure though. If it is a ground wire, where does the ground wire go to? I think the ground wire from the cluster is black but idk. Any other ideas?

It is a very simple thing to figure out if the ground for that is loose. Just take the cluster out, which means popping the little black rim out and removing three or 4 screws and then it slides out. Then there are two plugs on top of it and follow the only solid black one. You will find the ground and check to see if it is loose.

Also, is it all of the guages or is it just the tach?

Re: Stuck/intermittant tachometer

It's just the tach. I popped it out already but I believe that the thing is grounded somewhere on the firewall but it's impossible to trace the wire because of all the small openings it gos through. Not to mention all the wires are together in one wire sheath. Do you think it could be a bad cluster? They just replaced it trying to fix another problem. The thing is, it intermittently works which made me think it was a loose wire...

I would not think that it's a bad wire cluster. If it was, it would all not be working. A very logical idea is a lose wire... does the tach look like it sticks in one spot only or is it just random and stop working. Does it go all the way down to 0 or does it stay up at numbers?

Okay well... the dealer (used) that I bought it from is sending me a new cluster, but I'll have to maybe take it to a Honda dealer and see if they have any ideas. What wire would you think would be loose? I had thought it would be the ground wire but wouldn't the rest of the gauges go screwy then too?
