Tachometers in a automatic?

I was at the mall the other day and I walked by a older model civic with a Tachometer. The car was a automatic? Is it possible to use tachometers in a automatic or was that guy just using that setup for show? I mean if you can't shift the car yourself, why use a tachometer with a shift light.

Pontless show thing. You can still put 5" tach on automatics.

Isn't the tach that comes on the car good enough for automatics?

I have an automatic and I don't think i'll ever get one of them tach. It will be dumb putting a tach on a automatic. Plus i'm about keeping the car a sleeper.

well i mean maybe they race.....and like to keep track of the rpm shift point or something.....i mean people that race for consistant times use auto cause the shifting is consistant..unlike in manual ...i.e. missing gear

Maybe, but I don't see the point in getting something that the car already comes with. Maybe just buy a shift light?

I love my tach on my auto. It came with it and because it's the '03 Civic, the lights look so nice in my opinion. I wouldn't think of getting one if it didn't come with one.

are u serious........manual obviously comes with a tach and people still buy them for it so what is the difference anyway..........not like it matters what anyone thinks because if someone likes it.....then they like it.........i know i personally wouldnt change something because someone other than me didnt like it.........jmo

Uhm perhaps the supra had some work done allowing it to go past its stock rpm redline? dont some aftermarket tachs go to like 15k rpm? Maybe he had like some wicked awesome stuff done allowing him a 14k rpm redline OR maybe the stock tach just crapped out? like it matters anyway, they paid $130 for it, let them enjoy it.

lol!

Anyway, maybe the guy in the AT just wanted to monitor his engine rpm.

I can think of more useless gauges that people put in their cars.

Maybe I should get a clock gauge, since I don't have the stock cd player to tell me anymore. Then I know when it's time for dinner at least lol.

yeah i agree, tachs on autos are lame....but old skool civic dxs , like 97, have no rpm gauges...so i guess a tach would come to use ( if they want to check out how many rpms they running)..even thought htye do not need to shift

I honestly have no problem with that. I too have seen weirder (is that even a word) stuff. It's not putting anyone else in danger so I'm pretty much okay with it.

this is a silly subject but I used to race an automatic Nova and it had a monster tach in it...
just because you dont have a clutch doesnt mean that you dont need a tach!
everyone knows we have a rev limiter, monster tachs let you see in finer detail where you have to shift. ( IE... I did have a dual range tach) before that kicks in... but thats only if you drive it like you should, and not like your daddy would!!!

oh yeah I hate HEROS!!!

DX models(auto or manual) don't come with tachs right?
Thats one of the "advantages" or getting a LX...besides not having to roll up your windows...LOL.

Both Power Windows and a Tachometer can be added to any car for less than $150. I've done both. If I could do it over again, I wouldn't opt for the LX, I'd have waited and gotten the Si or RSX. Although well-equipped, the LX is the slowest of the civics in stock form. It might beat the hybrid, but who counts that?!
