dashboard indicates wrong gear

I searched for this problem in 7th gen forums and couldn't find this exact problem. I have a 2002 Civic Canadian Si coupe (American EX coupe) automatic. The mechanical coupling from shifter to transmission is fine, all positions work. Problem is, the dashboard gear display is out of sync with reality. This has no serious effects, except that the dashboard doesn't register that the car is in park, although the transmission is definitely in park. Therefore -> ignition won't turn to off -> key won't come out unless battery terminal disconnected -> car turns on in neutral if i bypass the shift lock. Is there a way to adjust the electronic connection between shifter and dashboard so that the dashboard gear display is in sync with the shifter and transmission? Thanks.

Re: dashboard indicates wrong gear

Part of your trouble with searching is that your gauge cluster displays the gear your in, not your dashboard. The problem likely stems from a sensor, check to see if your ECU is throwing any codes.

Re: dashboard indicates wrong gear

I have no way to check ECU codes. Can anyone tell me how the car receives electronic information regarding the current gear? Does the electronic sensing of current gear come from the transmission or near the shifter?

Most auto-parts stores will check for codes free of charge.
