REALLY noisy wheels on a 2002 Civic Coupé
Hi there!
I just bought a second-hand 2002 Civic Coupé and I love everything about it... except that at highway speeds the wheels are REALLY noisy. OK, it has sport tyres so you'd expect it to be a bit noisier than running on normal tires but still, I was surprised by the level of noise. I'm wondering, is this a known issue on this model or is there something wrong with my car?
thanks for the replies

its the tires not the wheels. get some nice tires next time with a quiet rating and it will sound like lexus. read tirerack.com reviews for noise ratings. almost all the road noise comes from tires.

You ever notice when someone in a small car is bassin it seems like the thing is gonna rattle apart? That's because it has no sound deadening like nicer cars. Ride in a civic then go ride in an accord with the same tires and you can hear the difference.
To the OP: If you get new tires and it still isn't quiet enough you can always use sound deadening.

MLV FTW!
I have Dunlop Star Specs on mine and it's noisier than the OEM all-seasons, but not as noisy as some of my friends' cars (have you ever ridden in a Grand Am?). If it really bothers you, get some vibration damping mat (I like Second Skin Audio's Damplifier), some acoustical foam or jute as a decoupler, and then a layer of mass-loaded vinyl. Vibration damper stops panel resonance, foam attenuates higher frequencies, and MLV reflects a broader spectrum of sound waves.
