Car shakes really bad on highway

Hey,

Yesterday, I was coming home from work and got on the highway and my car started to shake really badly.

What would cause this to come on so quickly? Wouldn't something wearing out or unbalanced tires come on slowly? There were no shakes when I was on the highway about 3 hours prior, and then they just started.

Bent rim? Ice stuck to tire?

The wheel shakes and the pedals feel like they're shaking as well.

It's possible that one of the sticky weights fell off one of your wheels. Causing the tire to come out of balance instantly. Snow buildup is another thing that does it to me. Sometimes it gets so bad I have to pull over and clean the snow out of the wheel well.

Re: Car shakes really bad on highway

I've got an appointment to get them looked at today at 2:00. I had a look at the wheel weights and they appear to both be there (one on each tire that I can see) but maybe there used to be another one or something.

I'm hoping all it needs is a balance... $12.

I once had some ice/snow buildup on inside one of my fat 5s and it felt like the car was going to come apart. I would check for that before taking it in.

Yeah, I had a quick look and did not see anything. I've got an LX so I've just got the plain steelies.

I drove on the highway 40 minutes and it still did it.. then I tried it again today and it did it still.

I'm gonna wash the car before I go and try to get some hot water in there.

When I got too much snow in the wheel wells I couldn't just clean it out with my hands. I took it to one of those car washes and used the pressure washer to blast the crap out. A lot of it I couldn't even see. That's when it stopped shaking. Definitely worth taking a shot before taking the car in.

I definitely agree with the previous posts. Accumulated snow and ice on the mud flaps and guards will cause the steering to shake pretty badly.

Yup - I took it to the car wash and pressure washed the wheel wells right out. Shaking stopped.

Scared me for second - only cost me $5 to fix though. And the car is just as dirty now as it was before.

I washed it at like 1:45 and my appt was at 2:00. I went in and said that I washed the car and the shaking stopped... the girl working the front desk with bottle cap glasses looked at me like I had three heads or something.
