New to me 2k1 Civic. Some issues
First off - Cool forum. After a few google searches regarding issues with my Civic your forum always pops up with a DIY write up. Lots of good info here.
I purchased a 2k1 Civic (LX Sedan with 5 speed) a few months back so I have something fuel efficient to drive back and forth to work with (82 mile round trip). It's 8 years and 125K miles old... I'm not suprised that it has flaws. But I'd like some info on how to fix some of the more annoying ones.
SRS light is on. - I found some good info here on resetting it and will try.
Front power windows are slow, and get stuck 1/2 way when rolling up. The windows roll up fast to the 1/2 way point, slow down (or stick) then roll up fast just like normal. Could they be hanging on something? Or need new motors?
Remote gas cap has to be popped by reaching into the trunk to pull the cable. Should I order a new cable? Or is there an adjustment?
The suspension has almost rattled a filling out of my head. I'm assuming the shocks/struts haven't been replaced. Any cheap aftermarket options?
Last, but not least - The transmission.
It pops out of 5th gear.
I've noticed it popping out more (constantly, unless held in place) now that it's below freezing outside. When the temp was warm it didn't give me much, if any problems.
I can feel it 'rock' forward and backward when I hit the throttle. It coasts fine, but as soon as I touch the gas 'pop' it goes.
I'm planning on changing the fluid this evening
I also saw a TSB on bushings. Would aluminum aftermarket ones be better than oem?
Comments?

Re: New to me 2k1 Civic. Some issues
Welcome,
My SRS light has been on since i got the car 4-5 yrs ago, only thing i have found was the whole paper clip thing which didn't work for me and i gave up
Regarding the windows i am not sure what could be wrong but my 01 does not do that, so it could possibly be the motors giving out.
On the gas cap thing, might want to check out http://fueldoorfix.com/ or you have to replace the whole cable, from the latch to the gas lid and trunk latch.
http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/...gry5=TRUNK+LID
there is an easy way to do it which honda techs know how
release the cables from the trunk and fuel door, attact the new cable to the old one with electrical tape and than detach it from the lever by the drivers seat and pull it through, it will get caught under the drivers seat but just pull up the carpet to free it
Suspension, i would not point the blame on the struts unless the ride is bouncy or you see any leaks. I really cant tell yah what to check other than taking it to your mechanic, same goes with the transmission i know jack.
Final and fore most, check out www.7thgenhonda.com most people from here left over there, still some real good info here about the 7thgen civics

Re: New to me 2k1 Civic. Some issues
Thanks for the info MidnightCivic.
I almost forgot about another 'issue' that might be by design. When I turn on the defrost the air conditioner light comes on... Normal?

Yup that's normal. It dries out the air which helps defrost. There is a way to turn it off if you don't like it.

Re: New to me 2k1 Civic. Some issues
search for the thread here about turning off a/c in defrost mode. theres a code that allows you to do it. for the windows, spraying silicone lube in the tracks where the window slides will greatly improve the speed. just roll down the windows, spray inside the channel, and let it dry for an hour maybe. this will last for several months before you need to do it again. mostly because dust and dirt gets in there and its not as smooth for the window glass. you can also lube the channels in the door panel too, but its alot more work. and the top ones usually will fix it.
if the ride is harsh, check tire pressure. it should be around 30 psi when cold. any higher and it gets really bumpy.
check fueldoorfix.com for a cheap way to connect the fuel cables together again.

Thanks gearbox.
I've got them set at 32... but the tires are junk and due to be replaced.
I'm installing new 6.5"s soon and will shoot the tracks down with silicone lube once the panels are pulled.
