New d17a1 engine redlines at 4000 rpm
New d17a1 engine redlines at 4000 rpm
My 1.7 SOHC VTEC motor died on me and I had a spare 1.7 SOHC NON-VTEC motor sitting around and decided to put it in. I got it in there and it runs good but it redlines at 4000 rpm. I didn't change anything else besides the motors so what could be wrong with it? ECU? PLUGS? MOTOR? what? Can anyone help me? Transmission is manual if that makes a difference.
Re: New d17a1 engine redlines at 4000 rpm
what do you think I should do now? switch ECU? put VTEC head on there? I also heard of the 7th gens having an engine immobilizer thing in the ECU. Even if I got a LX ECU, will it just be plug and play or do I have to get stuff programmed?

time for LX ecu, dont forget it has to be for manual trans. and then you need to have new keys flashed for the different ecu otherwise car wont start.

or maybe should I just put VTEC head on LX block? is it just take one head off and put the other on? or what? what about gaskets? would I need the whole $150 gasket kit or just the head gasket?

thats actually alot harder than it sounds. you need to find a good vtec head with solenoid, wire the solenoid manually to the ex ecu, then swap out the head. you need new head bolts (10 at $10 each = $100), and you need the full gasket kit for head, im, and exhaust plus oil and coolant. then you need to get the new head checked and prepped at a machine shop for at least another $100. just for supplies and checks, i would say $300-350, then the cost of the head, then labor for installing is usually at least 500. its an all day job.

i disagree, since he was already vtec, all he would have to do is switch headgaskets and heads with a new vtec head. 6 hours labor, done

for a trained mechanic, sure 6 hrs sounds about right. and thats assuming the head he plans to get is fine. would suck to spend all that time and realize it has bad valves, doesnt hold compression, has dirt in it or warped from previous overheating. unless he plans to spend 1200 for a new head.

heres an option

i spent 75 bucks on ebay and got a good head. i rebuilt it with new seals and relapped the valves for an extra 20 bucks and about 2 hours time

The head I have is from the EX engine that came in my car, the thing that was wrong with that engine was the bottom so thats why I had to put in the LX engine. Now I'm just thinking about taking the head off my old EX engine (with bad bottom) and putting it on my LX engine that I put in the car already.
