Catalyic Converter Plugged? 97 Civic LX

I was having issues with my car running really rich. Turned out to be a faulty coolant sensor. I repalaced the sensor and the car idles perfectly. However as the engine comes up to temperature the catalyic converter gets red hot and smokes. I am not confident in my ability to drive in this condition. Could this be excess fuel that was dumped into the exhaust while in the rich state burning off or potentially bigger problems?

Re: Catalyic Converter Plugged? 97 Civic LX

I'm getting the same thing on a 2002 civic. We just had the timing belt and water pump replaced a week ago. The fault code I'm getting is #1362, TDC Sensor, No Signal. It seems I can temporarily by pass the issue if I disconnect the upper O2 sensor. One of the other poster said he got the same thing and he had done the same repairs as I did. He just had to clean some A/F off the sensor. (?)

A/F sensor = O2 sensor
