Unsteady Idle

Engine in my 2002 Civic had not been started for about 2 years. I replaced all the belts, seals, water pump, thermostat, coolant, fuel, etc. Engine runs fine, proper compression, oil pressure, etc. But the idle cycles constantly between about 1300 RPM to 2300 RPM after running for about 5 minutes (after it warms up). I have heard that some people have fixed this problem by cleaning the throttle body. Anyone had experience with this problem?

Re: Unsteady Idle

you can try cleaning throttle body and air intake components like iac valve which is bolted to the throttle body with the two coolant hoses going to it. it might just be dirty and sticky.

Is there a check engine light? if not clean the TB like gearbox said. You could also have a air pocket in the cooling system. Did you make sure you got all the air out when you refilled it?

Re: Unsteady Idle

dont forget to also clean the IAC idle valve on the side of the throttle body. thats prolly the messed up part cause its too dirty to work properly. it has two coolant lines going to it.

AS STATED this is more then likely your problem. I had the same issue and did some looking into on this topic. Turns out for the 7th gen there are ALOT of civics with this same problem.

Re: Unsteady Idle

it usually gets the worst while the car is first breaking in. i havent had to clean mine at all past around 40k miles but ofcourse it depends how good the engine is running i guess and the air filter. its mostly carbon blowby that clogs the valve up and some outside dirt.
