diagnostics help

I need help figuring out what my car is doing.

When the car sits longer than like 30 minutes when I get it in and go to drive away it just bogs down and wants to die. Once I toy with it for about 2-3 minutes I can get it going and it runs completely normal for the rest of the trip. It is becoming quite annoying. Any suggestions?

I was thinking possibly fuel filter.

Re: diagnostics help

maybe dirty iac valve or throttle body since it seems to only do it when cold. fuel filter would cause problems all the time.

Agreed sounds like a combination of bad iac/cold plugs and maybe its getting the wrong fuel air mix?

Re: diagnostics help

spraying it inside with carb cleaner to remove all the black carbon will fix it. those almost never go bad.

Re: diagnostics help

is it me or are those three screws impossible to get out? They are locked up and it just doesnt seem like i can even get close to getting enough torque on them with just a screw driver to get them to break lose.

Re: diagnostics help

they are very hard to remove the first time. you gotta get the perfect size bit and push down hard while turning. spray them with liquid wrench too it helps.

They are hard, i dont need to warn you that you cant really afford to screw up taking them out < no pun intended >

But yeah, get the right bit and apply lots of downward pressure on the driver. Make sure you loosen each one before removing completely as there's a tiny little gasket inside you dont wanna lose.

Re: diagnostics help

I never took those screws out so I dont know how fragile they are, but it sounds like you need an impact screwdriver

Re: diagnostics help

i was thinking about the impact as a last resort but i ended up getting them out with the right lenghth screwdriver and right bit. Now that I have it off do I have to replace the gasket when i put it back on? Should I try and wipe the carbon build up with q tips or something or just get it as clean as i can by spraying? Should I spray up in the throttle body and clean in there as well? Also while it is off besides cleaning the iac valve should I do anything else with the throttle body?

Re: diagnostics help

ok, so i just sprayed and scraped all the stuff out of the iac valve and a little where the iac valve connects to the throttle body. I put everything back together and it still did it. I put it in drive and it will start moving but after I give it a little throttle it just bogs down. I replaceced my cone filter as well.

Re: diagnostics help

yeah you want it to look like new. scrub all the black stuff out. are you getting any check engine light? is the rpm just dropping and stalling? did you remove the throttle body? if you did, you must do the ecu reset and idle learn procedure otherwise the idle speed will fluctuate. warm up the engine and turn the car off, disconnect battery, reconnect, start car, let it idle for 10 mins without using accessories or pressing gas. shut off car, then start again. idle should be set. if that doesnt work, you have a different issue like possibly spark plugs, clogged injectors, etc.

Re: diagnostics help

ok, i hate to bring this thread back but im still having issues. Once I cleaned the iac valve, it stopped doing this all the time and started doing it about 60% of the time. I tried to find some sort of pattern with no luck. So I changed the spark plugs (bosch platinum) and since then it hasnt done it. However, it does have some hesitation sometimes like it wants to bog down but it doesnt. Furthermore, it has been running real sluggish. When I did the iac valve I didnt take the throttle body off I just cleaned what I could where the iac valve meets it. When I did the iac valve I also changed my air filter. Before I did the iac valve I ran a tank of premium through with a can of sea foam. I think it is the fuel injectors but I am not sure. I was gonna try some more fuel injector cleaner. Any suggestions on what to use? Any other thoughts on what it could be? Car has 86,xxx miles

thanks for the help, it is much appreciated

Re: diagnostics help

its hard to say. make sure you use only ngk or denso plugs. could be clogged injectors or even a clogged cat converter. usually idle issues are caused by iac valve being dirty, pcv valve, or dirty injectors not spraying in a mist pattern.

Re: diagnostics help

cause they were made for hondas. bosch and other brands will cause engine problems. i had 3 people over the last month pm me for hesitation and engine bogging issues and they were all using bosch plugs. i told them put in some cheap ngk copper plugs and everything got fixed.

Re: diagnostics help

I am having the EXACT same problem right now. I have no check engine light on, and the dealer I brought the car to couldn't replicate the problem. I am trying to sell this car but can't with this nagging issue.

It sounds like I should start by cleaning this valve, and if that doesn't work, try replacing the plugs?

Re: diagnostics help

aschattke-change the plugs like gearboxs said if you spend more then like $15 then ur buying the wrong ones. You want the most basic single prong ngks or denso.

NBP- I say u clean your throttle body and IAC as well. When I had a rough idle it wasnt my problem either, but it never hurts to have a clean IAC and tb.
