Stripped Nut
Stripped Nut
I'm trying to replace my semi-rusted out manifold on my 04 civic EX. I have one stripped nut on a bolt holding my manifold on to my engine I've searched the internet for ideas. Its in an awkward place that I can't get vice grips to and I've tried using WD-40 and LiquidWrench, I even went out and bought a stripped nut socket kit, but that just carved out the nut more. I priced it out and the cheapest place that would do it for me was $150. For one F****** bolt. I was thinking about buying a nut splitter but I dont even think that will fit. If anyone has any Ideas let me know. This thread was half em venting and half me asking for advice.
Here are some pictures for a better visual.

Re: Stripped Nut
That has to be the worst nut to strip ... ever... My suggestion is if nothing else works to get a torch and use your removal tool that you bought. Heat the stupid nut till its nice and hot and then use the removal tool to try and get it off. That's about the only advice I can offer... Be very careful not to heat up anything around it too much and to move all flammables out of the way. Other than this I have no idea. Pay the 150 bucks or look for a better place that will do it for cheaper.
Yeah I just got done working on it. I started at 9(pm) and it's now 1:20(am) I had help from my brother and my friend. I went out and bought a "Nut Cracker" but the bolt was so stripped we couldn't get that to catch, we tried to get the good ol' Dremel in there to cut off the bolt, but nothing. Tried Chiseling out the bolt, nothing seems to work. Something I thought was going to take a couple hours of the better part of the afternoon at max, has ended up costing me almost a days worth of work. And I think I might.. for lack of a better term bite the nut and fork out the $$150

HMMM... well the stud looks ****ed too, your going to need to take that.
I'd say dremel the nut off and remove the stud. Simple. Sucks that its in the worst spot ever, but its not impossible with the headshield off.

Re: Stripped Nut
ugh that sucks. i just did mine the other day and for that particular nut (with your ac line in the way like mine was) you can only get pretty much 2 clicks out of a ratchet. i had to put the ratchet and use a 4 ft post on it as a breaker bar. it was on there that tight. with it being that stripped i doubt you will be able to do anything to get it off with any tool. have you tried to use a small hacksaw? it will take forever but if you can fit it in, it can be done. a guy on our local site showed how he hacked a couple off in his diy by cutting inward towards the engine and parallel to the bolt on both sides of the bolt so you get something like this: (|o|) from something like this (o). i dunno, you can take a look at his diy and see if you can manage to get it done...

Re: Stripped Nut
Well its another day.. I slept on it. I'm really ready to try anything you guys throw at me.
TRIZ- I think your right, that bolt on there is screwed am I going to have to take off the cam head to get in there and change out that bolt? Just cut the bolt and the nut clean off? I'm pretty much an amateur at this, but I'm learning.. I suppose the heard way. lol
unTuned- Yeah can't really get the hack saw in there, but we did get the demel in there a bit. but with the angle I can't get a good piece of the bolt.
Some one on the local form sent me a link to this tool.

He said 60 seconds with this and I'll be done.. I'm pretty septic about it considering I've alreadu spent close to $60 bucks on crap to get this off. There nice tools to have anyway just didn't think I'd buy them all at once.
I think I might try something drastic, I just need some opinions. Taking a hack saw or sawzall and just cutting off the old manifold pipe to try and get some more room in there? Maybe then I can get some file I there to level out the nut and get some vicegrips or something in there like untuned said. It's kinda chop shop getto ****ed but I don't want to pay the $150, and this much time put in to it, It's a goal.

Re: Stripped Nut
I screwed up the stud and I've been looking for new studs online for the past hour or so.. maybe I'm not looking in the right spots. Anyone know where a good place to look would be? And maybe a link on how to change them?
Re: Stripped Nut
Yeah I resulted in cutting the closest manifold pipe to the nut. After I did that I was able to get some needle nose vicegrips in there but the stud was ****ed at that point and I couldn't get the nut off all the way, but I was able to get the "Nut Cracker" in there to split the nut. So now my next step is to replace the stud. Am I correct in thinking its a Lock nut? And Should I just Replace all of them while I'm at it? And is this stud something I might be able ot pick up at like NAPA or another Auto parts store of have to order, or search around a yard for?

Re: Stripped Nut
OKay, first off, that tool looks suspect as ever. I dont see how that can possibly help you get the nut off.
Dont dremel it clean off
No you dont need to remove the cam
No you dont need to remove the valve cover
No dont replace them all
No dont go to a junk yard
And OMG, dont take any advice in this thread thats been offered so far!
Go to http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/...catdisplay.jsp
The stud is $1.66. Your going to get screwed on shipping, no pun intended. Go to the dealership and have them order it.
As for getting the stud out, I'm trying to remember if its a reverse threaded stud or not. I cant recall. I"m thinking its not..
Thread two nuts on there, if you can... if you cant, use a tap and die set to re-thread the stud a size smaller
Your going to use a wrench (or whatever you can get to fit in there can will turn a bolt) to turn one bolt onto the other, create pressure, and unscrew the stud out of the cylinder head. BAMB, its out. Apply some high temp grease or lock tite or whatever your decide to the next one you put in. Use the same bolt trick to get it in. Yahmean?

Just to update everyone.
I got my nut off!!!(no pun intended)
my new OBX Exhaust is on minus the one stud and nut I have to replace. And My Weapon R intake came in last night and I put that on as well.
Holy **** TRIZ that was really easy to find.. I was searching stuff on Google and getting taken to all these sites that didn't help me at all. Thanks man. I'll know to look on the actual Honda site next time I need something like that. (go figure)
P.S. Even though you didn't mean to make that pun I still laughed because this hole experience has been ridiculous.
In closing thanks to everyone that gave me advice and helped me out.
To all of you guys you deserve a
