2001 Civic LX Sedan.
Approx 210,000km
Last night after filling a tank of gas... on my way home I noticed the car was shifting gears worse than normal.
The engine light came on, and by the time I hit my street, the car would not shift into gears anymore...(I tried D, D3, 2) All had no luck.. the car eventually slowed down and I stopped and shut the car off.
After about 5 minutes, I turned the car back on and drove for 10 seconds more just to make it into my driveway.
So now my question is... is it for sure the Tranny gone bad? How can it go from not engaging any gears at all and now it does?
This sucks... I knew my Auto Tranny would go eventually but I wasnt feeling any significant slippage more than normal...
Any ideas???
THanks

Re: Automatic Transmission Dead?
need to find out what code its throwing..
My car bogged down on me on the highway last week and practically turned off...i thought it was my auto tranny also but it ended up being the tdc sensor gone bad. Car is working fine now...

Re: Automatic Transmission Dead?
it really could be anything, esp if the trans was not slipping previously. ive had the car stop shifting (got stuck in gears actually and just would barely drive) from a bad tps sensor.check your trans fluid level too and condition of the fluid.

Re: Automatic Transmission Dead?
tps sensor is on the throttle body facing forward. but engine light would have come on for that. you really need to see what the code means first instead of guessing.

Problem is... I pulled the negative on my battery when i was playing around with it after it happened.
Does it still have the CEL codes in memory? Or does the light have to come on again?

I drove it for about 2 minutes around the block before work today...
I can hear a whining noise... and when it changes gears it slipps pretty bad now.. especially between gear 2-3... light still has not come on again.
I will try driving it again when I get home from work...
Thanks for the responses Gearbox

Re: Automatic Transmission Dead?
yeah youre screwed. slipping 2-3 switch is the tsb problem with the auto trans defective secondary clutch pack which honda knew about but did nothing except release the info once all the cars affected were out of warranty. it just wears out prematurely (due to poor materials) until all the teeth are gone and it cant grab the next gear. the whining you hear is your trans oil pump failing due to chunks of clutch pack clogging it. when the whining stops, car wont move and you need a new trans. my 02 auto has been slipping 2-3 gear shift since 50k miles. im at 90k tho and been lucky it hasnt gotten any worse than 500rpm slippage. im driving til it dies. i also have an aftermarket trans oil cooler and an oem external cvt fluid filter that i change yearly along with drain/refill with honda atf.

Re: Automatic Transmission Dead?
My next question is:
Would you just replace the tranny with an 04/05?
Or just spill a little more money for an engine swap along with tranny?
Which engines work and cost the least with our cars?
OR should I just dump it and sell as is... for really cheap..
This sucks..

Re: Automatic Transmission Dead?
cheapest is the k20a3, then the a2 is more expensive and faster. a3 with hondata ecu will be about the same or a tad better than a stock a2. or you can just look for a used auto trans to drop in from 04-05. but im not sure if they fixed the problem for those years.

Re: Automatic Transmission Dead?
UPDATE:
Ok I left my car for a couple weeks.
I start it up last night and drove it around the block for 5 minutes.
No more buzzing/whining sound, and car shifts normally now...
Engine light was reset so I can't pull codes.
Any idea why the issue seems to have gone away? Or does this happen with bad trannys goes on and off???

Re: Automatic Transmission Dead?
it will come back dont worry. all the pieces maybe settled to the bottom so it takes a while to get them back into circulation.

You should still be able to pull the code..it will still be in the ecu's memory...My engine light took off and i was still able to get the code
Re: Automatic Transmission Dead?
Hi all, today i think my tranny just went south. i had 176,000 KMS. Car won't move even on any gears. I got stuck in the middle of an intersection when it went, Before this i have been troubleshooting a whining sound in the engine , specially when cold. Went through the forums to get some help. Had my car towed to a shop and they diagnose as a bad tranny. Got a quote for 1200 Canadian with labor. is that a good price for a used tranny?
thanks

Re: Automatic Transmission Dead?
thats not bad, try to get a 2004-2005 auto trans, i think they are built better. the whining is a classic sign the trans is about to go, caused by the pump clogging with debris from the roasted clutch pack.
