5th gear is out

ok so shifting into 5th isn't the problem, its keeping the car in 5th. it'll stay in gear for a few short seconds then it kicks out into neutral. i'm pretty sure that its a bad synchro. hoping someone can confirm this thought. also has anyone ever replaced a synchro. thanks

Re: 5th gear is out

I had an 88 Sentra do that to me. After doing it in 5th it started doing it in 4th gear. The mechanic said it will work it's way through all of the gears. Don't count on the problem fixing itself.

Re: 5th gear is out

well. i've been out of town for a little while so i haven't driven the car much lately. but i think i have come to the conclusion that with 80000 miles on it, i should go ahead and just do a rebuild rather than paying for a new synchro replacement. would much rather spend the money on a rebuilt tranny instead of running the risk that in 1000 miles something is still wrong with the transmission. also good excuse for a new clutch
