Couple problems lead to big decision, nee some help.
Okay i searched around for little bit and found some helpful tips. Turns out i blew at least one piston ring, my input shaft barring in the trans, and possibly a seal or two in the valve train. i have an 01 ex coupe (sohc 1.7 vtec) and while the engine is out, I'm trying to decide if i should fix the existing engine which means pulling it out and taking everything off it reapairing everything and all that. While i have the engine out, if i choose this option, i want to build the motor for a turbo. Shot peening my rods and new pistons maybe a few other little things. another option is a swap for a newer, maybe k20a2, k24 or other engine with a little more power than mine. my dad knows a guy that has the d17a1 with 15K miles on it but it doesnt have vtec n im wondering if theres any difference in the ecu or anything that would have to be changed out to run a non vtec motor. if i did get the non vtec i would probably build that motor too but it starts off with a lower compression ratio than the vtec engine. Not sure how much lower but im looking for about a 8.8:1 ratio n ill run about 10 or 12 lbs of boost. This is a daily driven car and would like reliability but I love that sound of a sexy turbo screaming when i shift. Money is an issue but ive got time to do this so cheap would be nice but not a necessity. Any advice on which options (preferably unbiased) are more realistic or quicker, cheaper, anything helps. i will be pulling the engine myself, doing most of the work myself. Thanks in advance for any help.

if you have money, go with a2 swap. otherwise put a working stock d17 in there and move on. its not really worth the money and problems and more money you will spend on building and then turbo the motor and then fixing it every time something breaks (and it will).

if you have the money a k swap is great. but i still dont care what anyone says, a turbo is freakin fun. yeah its a little more maintenance, and you better be able to do your own work if something breaks but still. if you do decide to build a d for turbo, its really worth nothing if you dont turbo it. the d17 doesnt respond to n/a building at all, and if you end up not turboing it, you will have sunk a ton of money into a motor that doesnt really make any hp. just something to consider before you dive in.

okay, update on my situation. getting a working d17a2 with 16k miles on it from a 2005 em2, has a year warranty, installed for 900 bucks. I wanted to do the work myself but oh well. once the old engine is out, im getting the a/c removed because i never use it anyways plus itll make room for any other goodies in the engine bay. My trans might be blown too, if it is im going to get the engine back to stock working condition and sell the motor with the trans, sell the new engine, and buy swap. Basically im going to have two d17a2 engines, one that runs, and one that i could to spend some time saving money to build up, doing all the work myself on the old blown engine. My best bet right now is looking like a turbo unless my block on the blown engine is all effed, or some other major part besides pistons and rods because those are coming out anyways, or if the trans is blown. If the trans or the block are damaged ill sell the two engines and the tranny and probably put all the money towards a k series swap. Let me know what you think.
p.s. thanks for your opinions guys.

go for the a2 swap im doing it in may next year ive got an 04 ex coupe 1.7 sohc that i blew the engine in a few months ago same situation as you but i just swapped in another d17 which yes sounds retarded but it only had 19k on it and i got it for 700 shipped so its giving me time to finish saving for everything for my a2 swap. best of luck with that

okay i think i might have decided somewhat, at least an outline of what im going to do. im going to return the blown engine to stock, but first im going to offer to anyone on here either a built motor for a little over the price of parts, a blown engine for them to build up, or a completely rebuilt stock d17a2. itll include everything, and ill make sure i get it started before i try to give it to anyone. pm me or reply to this message if youre at all interested, ill probably make a thread offering it. but anyways i think im going to first get a ksport coilover kit, new tires, an exhaust, a few other little goodies to get my car a little ready for the extra power and speed that gets put in later. then once the one year warranty is up on the new one ill take it out and either swap the engine or turbo it depending on what my money and car reliability and all that is like. and btw anyone know anyone with a 5 speed trans for a d17? preferably the ex trans, shorter gears for now. thanks in advance for any opinions or helpful tips.
