Exclamation engine knock? grinding?

Ok, so im driving thru a parking garage surrounded by metal and concrete and i turn off my radio cuz i hear something odd...

when i rev from 700-about 2k rpm, i hear a weird metal grinding AND something like a knock... from my engine... after about 2k its drowned out by my exhaust, but if u get under the hood, and hold the throttle, u can hear it all throughout the power band...

how can i be hearing this knocking and grinding and no be throwing a CEL? it seriously sounds like I messed something up.

i had it in the shop less than 3 days ago cuz i heard weird noises and they said it wasnt anything but my exhaust pipes flexing... idk about that... lol

so, any tests i can do to see if it something like engine knock or maybe grinding?

btw, if it is engine knock, should i rebuild this d17, or swap a k20? lol a built d17 would handle alot of boost...

but seriously, wtf?!?!

i dont EVER rev the car hard, or race her... i drive her nice and slow and savor the sound and the great gas mileage. lol it sounded soooo sexy... now it bugs the **** outta me!

Re: engine knock? grinding?

Sounds like you have a case of rod knock, when the rod slides on the wrist pin and hits the inside of the piston skirt. One thing you can do is try some higher octane gas and see if it goes away. If it does, then your car has a pre-ignition or detonation problem. If the problem persist, listen closer to it and see if you can pin point whether its coming from the head, or from the block. If its coming from the head, have you run low on oil recently? If its coming from the block, I would definitely think its rod knock.
hope this helps

Re: engine knock? grinding?

ya, took my car to the shop... its knocking.. not much... but the connecting rod he said was bent and all that crap. he says it would be fine for a while but i told my GF the engine is gonna fail so she said I can take my turbo money and buy a K20... SWEET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

btw, he will swap for $800 and tune. love this guy. he is the ****.

anyone know of any GOOD places to buy a k20? i dont care if its used, but it needs to be in decent condition, and needs all the stuff to be swapped into my 03 EX.

thank god my engine started making noise...

Re: engine knock? grinding?

should i get a K20A or K20A2?

one is like 6k just for the engine, tranny, ecu and all that, and the other is all the same stuff, 40HP less and like $2,000

idk...

also, the K20A is from the RSX-R and puts down 220HP and runs crazy high compression.. but gets to use a 6 speed hydro tranny.

sexy.

Re: engine knock? grinding?

k20a3 is on ebay for around $1200. but if you want faster, go with a2. i hear the jdm motors tend to knock unless you give it really good gas like 93+

Re: engine knock? grinding?

^ most likely due to higher static compression

but like gear said, a3's can be had for fairly cheap. check local salvage yards for rear-ended base rsx and ep3 hatches.

good luck!!

i looked on ebay and didnt find anything but parts for a K...

links please?

btw, i want to go faster, but always want to run on 91 octane or lower with medium compression so i can boost her in a few months.

ive already made some calls, and can get a k20a2 with full engine, tranny (bolted up), axles, ecu, wires and harnesses, alternators, starters, all that for like 3k.

these are two badass engines man.

im thinking the second one, but if i can get cheaper, with all that stuff included, i will go for it.

btw, ill do a write up and take **** loads of pics when im putting her in.
