Please Help! Cylinder Misfire

So, I changed the oil, air filter, and plugs in my car about a week ago cause it started acting funny, on the way hoem today it throws check engine light, and shuts off, I fire it up and limp it to the local parts store runnig clearly on 2 cylinders, they scan it and it says cylinder 1 and 2 misfire, than multiple cyclinder misfire. I get it home, unplug the Coilpacks, clean then inspect for cracks, reinstall, and nothing. Any ideas? I figure it has to be somehting to do with coil packs since it still does start and drive. The plugs are NGK Irridiums by the way. Anyway the car could have jumped time?

Re: Please Help! Cylinder Misfire

How was it acting funny before you changed the plugs? Was anything done to the car prior to it acting funny or getting the CEL?

If nothing has been done but what you stated below, I would first check to make sure the coil packs are seating properly over each spark plug. Also, make sure the electrical connectors are connected securely and not broken. You should have only unplugged the 4 coil pack connectors, but double check to make sure nothing else might be unplugged...

How many miles are on your car? I very well could have jumped time, if the timing belt is overdue for change and it jumped some teeth. To check this you could pull the valve cover and upper timing belt cover and verify timing is on (crank and cam at TDC).

Re: Please Help! Cylinder Misfire

Nope, you can't jump time with the D17 unless the cam bolt is slipping some how but that would be a catastrohic fault in a matter of a few seconds. Swap your coil packs around and see if you can get cyls. 3 and 4 to misfire instead of 1 & 2 to help you troubleshoot that problem.

Ok, I think its either coilpacks or crank position sensor. Rufus, you have a pm.

I read about someone with this same problem- they switched back to regular plugs and the engine was happy.

Re: Please Help! Cylinder Misfire

Ill give that a shot, cause it acted pretty normal untill I did the plugs, I think the light lope in idle was the AC compressor starting to go out. I talked to a friend and he actually said the same thign bou tthe plugs.

Re: Please Help! Cylinder Misfire

Alright, I put in some NGK V-powers, they said they were the OEM replacements, the car does run smother at idle, didnt drive down the road though. But, when I rev it up, it still acts liek it isnt firing on all cylinders. I check the coils, they all look good, no crack sor anything, all plugs are in good shape, nothyign cam eloose ect.

Could the O2 sensor have anyhtign to do with this? It sounds more ignition related, but, Im no mechanic.

Re: Please Help! Cylinder Misfire

Well I think I would do what Clint just said. Try to follow the misfire......swap coils, they are all the same. If the misfires switch to 3&4 you know it's the coils. Fuel rich plugs = no ignition. Also make sure your tube seals/valve cover gasket are not leaking oil onto plugs & coil. Plugs gap'd right?

Are cars can jump timing due to the auto tensioner....tensioner fails, belt slacks, & boom. I don't think I'd call it jumped timing...more like bent valves. The possibility of it jumping off & then back onto another knotch/tooth...is like jumping pogo stick to pogo stick (try it...i dare you!) I have seen maybe 1car that has ever done this.....I even still have doubts bout the diagnosis of my mechanic. Plus your car would go 'smack!!!-smack!!!-smack!!!'

Pretty easy to follow misfires on the d17.....Swap coils....if that don't do it....swap injectors & follow misfire(if you can't find ignition issue)....check sensor signals(doubt it w/o codes)....if all else fails you gotta look at valves or bottom end. Leak down test will confirm any sucked up valves or blown rings.....How many miles?

Just did a 02 corrola w/ 60,000 miles today! Misfire code in #1 & #2...leak down test @ 70 psi.....cylinders could only hold 10......intake & exhaust sealed shut no leaks.....piston rings shot. So you see a car w/ 60k can break just as easy....just some incite on worst case scenario

Ps> never seen 02 sensor cause misfires....even when primary 02 sensor fails! Have a customer that doesn't want to shell out the $500 for a new one....she said it drives great just gets 5-10 mpg less Cool huh?

Re: Please Help! Cylinder Misfire

Alright, well, took it to a local mechanic who sai dhed check it out for free, his diagnosis was its the intake, he said that teh computer has to be recalibrated to accep the increas in airflow, so, I swaped it to the stock airbox, disconnected the battery for 5-10 minetes, put ti back on, and not much change. I did notice that while I drive it, if I just barely give it gas, it is runnig on all cylindes, but, as soon as I give it anymore gas, it misses and doesnt run fr ****. My RX7 did that when I bough tit and it was fuel filter. Although that does not explain the codes Its throwing.

Thanks fo rthe inf FoSho. I hope thats not it, but, I will pass the info on.

Re: Please Help! Cylinder Misfire

What codes is it throwing besides the misfire? The free advice that mechanic gave you is worth exactly what you paid for it - jack ****.

Check your coil packs.

Re: Please Help! Cylinder Misfire

I got ti scanned again, I had, cylinder 1-2-3 misfire, a multiple cylinder fisfire, and a AIT sensor failure. I am going to get some coilpacks today to see what that does, and go from there I geuss. It seems liek every time I plug the scan tool in, it throws another code.

Re: Please Help! Cylinder Misfire

Damn. Electrical gremlins are the worst to hunt down.

Try some contact cleaner and a toothbrush on the coilpacks where they snug around the sparkplugs AND the place where they plug into the ignition connectors up top... if you have swapped coils and they still randomly misfire, you still have your old plugs anywhere? what did your old plugs look like, lots of fouling? Clean? burned? I think an analysis of the old plugs might give us another direction to go as well.

Re: Please Help! Cylinder Misfire

The old plugs got pitched, but, they werent bad, just felt liek doing a tune up on the car, they were just a bit dark, didnt smell liek gas, werent oil covered, didnt have white elctrodes or anything. I do recall 1 plug wasnt in the head very far, maybe the coil didnt click onto the plug so they didnt screw it in all the way. I foudn a local honda mechanic and worke dout a deal to do some bodywork in trade for the mechanic work, but, Ill let u guys know what the problem was.

Also, I swapped coils, and didnt get anythign beter, but, re scanned it, I got cylinder 1-2-3 and multiple cylinder misfire codes, and a AIT sensor malfunction, with maintence light, and check engine code. Car run ok till u got into the gas a little bit, kinda liek a fuel filter, or secondary injectors.
