major maintenance
Hey guys,
I bought my civic 01 ex coupe at around 90K miles. Since then, I've replaced the alternator and belt and besides oil changes, that's about it. I'm at around 153K and the only basic maintenance I've done in the past is the minor maintenance like fluid changes, including transmission. I've always heard about the timing belt snapping which would cause engine failure, etc. Sounds like I'm well over due. When should I have done it? Also, I heard when the timing belt is changed, the water pump should be too. Can you guys give me a check off list of maintenance work I need to do now at 153K miles to give to my local mechanic? And how much could I expect to pay for such? Thanks!

Re: major maintenance
timing belt should be every 90k miles, so get it done asap! water pump too, and crank pulley if you can afford it. usually around $400 or less for timing belt service.
Re: major maintenance
I just did my timing belt and while in there I also did the following.
- Water Pump
- Alternator Belt (Sounds like you already had yours done)
- Power Steering Belt
- Spark Plugs
- Valve cover gasket
- Spark Plug tube seals
Honda dealer where I'm at wanted between $750-$850 (Not including the spark plugs) to do those items so I did it myself for around $200. If I had been able to get it done for $400, I would have had it done as well but didn't find any price near that low. Good luck!

Re: major maintenance
Yeah, usually shops charge a good 800 for timing belt changes.
If you go to www.honda.com, you can find a list of recommended services at mileages as well, they are posted ALL over this site.

Re: major maintenance
Timing belt and all accessories driven by timing belt. At 153K, you are driving on borrowed time - that belt snaps and its sayonara mr. engine. The timing belt tensioner is supposed to last every other timing belt change, but I'd get it done especially with the miles you have on it.
Valve Clearance Adjustment / spark plug seals and VC gasket.
Spark Plugs
Coolant Flush if not already done.
Check suspension - Shocks, struts, etc. Green01 just posted the ball joint DIY today, check those as it is a big safety issue. CV boots. If you have your ride lowered at all expect to spend some money on suspension maintenance as it is definitely harsher on the components.
brake fluid flush / rotors / pad checks.
Rear drums if they've never been done. Check the wheel cylinders, they tend to leak. It would be a good time to do the disc swap as it is slightly more expensive but infinitely more easy than doing PITA drums.
PS Fluid flush and PS drive belt.
Clutch fluid flush and check / lube your slave cylinder to make sure it doesn't start clicking like the TSB. Lithium grease behind the clutch pedal at the master cylinder for the same reason.
Will edit later, I know I'm missing something. Check my DIY's below for how to do most of it.
