Electrical Problems
Electrical Problems
About two weeks ago I started having problems with power generation in my 7th gen. When running the car with the lights on the gauges go out and everything dims. I tested the alternator and it was putting out 10 volts. I replaced the alternator and when replacing it noticed a broken bolt on the old alternator that had caused slack on the S-belt and decided that was the cause of the low power output. I decided to replace the alternator anyway since the old one had 140k miles on it. The car ran fine for a week and then same problem as before. When running the car with the lights on the gauges go out and everything dims. When I turn the lights off the car runs ok until I hit the brakes and then everything dims again. Testing the voltage across the terminals I get 10 volts. I took the battery to autozone and found it to be a bad battery and replaced it. They tested my old alternator and it was still good. I drove the car for another week. Tonight on the way home in the rain with the wipers on and the lights on, everything dimmed. The wipers wouldn't work. Lights were too dim to see out of and I drove home with no lights or wipers in the rain. Now that I'm glad to be home, I test the voltage across the battery and it reads 12 volts with the car running. After replacing the battery a week ago it tested 14.5 volts with the car running. I really don't know what's going on here. Any ideas?
Re: Electrical Problems
Quick update:
I disconnected the powersteering pump to get to the alternator. I retentioned the S-belt, and started the car. Testing the output off the alternator, I show 14.5 volts. I hooked the powersteering pump back up and tested the voltage output again and it shows 13.5 volts! When the fan kicks on at idle it drops even further to 13.1 volts! WTF I can't figure this one out.

Re: Electrical Problems
The ELD (electronic load detector) unit will have the voltage all over the place even with a load.
I would say it will vary between something like 13 to 14.5 Volts when operating normal.
Take note if it drops below that.

Re: Electrical Problems
I have a similar problem... I have a 02 Civic HX
Its really random, but when driving out of no where I hit my brakes or turn on the heat or AC and everything cuts our for a second... the radio, guages, headlights dim and SRS light comes on... it happens a few times in a 1 minute period and then doesnt come back for days sometimes weeks... I replaced the alternator and it has not changed the problem.
