02 civic starting to burn oil

just checked all my fluids last night and found that the car has started burning oil somewhat. im suspecting that it burnt 1qt from nov-jan which isn't much but it will become bigger. car has 119K mi... 90% highway miles

im going to be replacing the timing belt this summer and was wondering if changing the valve seals would fix this but it could be the rings as well. or there might be somthing else i could try

thanks

Re: 02 civic starting to burn oil

I have a 2001 Honda Civic with 108k, and just recently had my timing belt changed. I too have a oil leak. I had all the seals dealing with the timing belt changed, and my mechanic (really good guy does all my major work) said that it was a seal around the old pan. Apparently around the corner of the oil pan there is some type of silicon seal that is starting or has been flaking off and that is was the cause of my leakage. He also said it was a common problem with my year car, and replacing it really isn't just regular or something you would anticipate. Hope that helps.

OK, so it burns oil. You'll have to determine where you're leaking from before you just start replacing random seals. While you're getting the timing belt replaced, it's an easy thing for the mechanic to replace the cam and crank seals so let him do that. It could be valve stem seals and it could also be piston rings. I would have the mechanic do a leakdown test on your car as this will help determine if you're piston rings aren't sealing anymore. Bad news is that if that's the problem, you're looking at a sizable investment in time and/or money to fix it properly. All depends on how you want to handle the news really.

Re: 02 civic starting to burn oil

ill have to look at the oil pan this weekend, but everytime i have changed my oil there is nothing leaking underneath...so im guessing this must be internal.
could do the leak down test as well.

changing the seals while im doing the timing belt/water pump would be the best bet while im in there.

i just threw out the piston ring idea because my other accord did this as well, but burnt ALOT more than this and didnt have the power so it must have been the rings. ( i know the rings are a b*tch to replace this is a last resort id have to take.) ill also check the spark plugs see if there is any oil in the tubes as this might be another issue as well.

EG06KRS - do you have a noticable leak under the car when it sits? mine does not

Well it is a really slow leak. If it is sitting on concrete it is like a couple drops. But it does show signs that is it leaking. Sorry guess it was a pointless post.

Re: 02 civic starting to burn oil

I would try some additives before doing anything crazy. Maybe also switch to a synthetic oil if your not already using that.
