Losing Gas Significantly! Help!!!
hi i know for our 7thgens.. actually.. for ALL civics it is suppose to be a gas saver but ive been losing gas dramatically. i have a feeling it has to do with the air flow to the engine. i had a ebay intake installed for about a week and i threw back on the stock intake. unfortunately it also feels that like ive lost power too and i can still hear a 'filter' type of noise. as in like air sucking in or something.
could it be i put the stock intake back on wrong?
IM GETTING LIKE 21 MPG!!
please let me know. i cant afford this any longer. gas is expensive and im a broke college student. its why i have a civic in the first place. LET ME KNOW GUYS! PLEASE AND THANKS IN ADVANCE!

Hmmm, since we cant take a look- you need to double check it. Hows the sensors look, anything blocking the path?
By the off chance its a problem with your tank, get on the ground behind the rear drivers wheel and look in there to make sure it doesnt look like that coulper came loose for some odd reason.

losing gas could mean lot of thing's. For you to figure it out would be a process of elimination.
Well I know you're going to say you have NOT been but..Try not to drive it hard or rev it up too high
Check and make sure nothings leaking on the ground or the frame.
Make sure there is no blow-by in the engine compartment
Tune up (Fuel filter, Spark plugs, Wires ETC)
It could also be because you switched and put a cold air intake on that the computer switched up it's sensor's. So disconnect it from the battery for 10 min's then hook it back up and let it run for a few more minutes then take a little ride in it so the CPU can re-learn itself. (even do this if you put the stock one back on), This also apply's to catback mufflers
If you have a Laptop, Hooking it up to the laptop would be best. Anything could happen when bad gas mileage happens, Hell the choke could be stuck and delivering bad Air/fuel

^^ we dont have wires but im sure he gets what u mean.. did u connect the MAF sensor or whatever its called back up correctly to the oem one? when u put on the ebay intake, the only way that sensor would plug into it is if u took the adapter from the oem intake.. did u get that back off the ebay intake and shove it back in ur oem one?? no CELs?? maybe ur just flooring too much.. i dont think u could have installed the oem one wrong.. look on google for the d17 engine bay and compare it to how urs looks.. also go check under ur car for any fluids.. any weird smells.. fumes in your trunk or around it.. anything at all...turn off ur music and raise ur windows.. turn off the a/c for a mintue and drive on a quiet road..listen for anything while ur driving at different rpms and speeds.. leave ur car at idle and in nuetral (or P) and go outside and open the hood..see if anything is wrong while the cars running??

) after a minute or so of idle it was normal again... after checking the engine bay, i noticed that some of the bolts/screws of the intake were loose so i tightened it but still the same problem. also when i floor it, it has more of a "roar" to it as if my airbox was uncovered. i drove without an airbox cover for awhile just for that sexy beasty sound
well if anything, i guess i can just take apart the intake and reassemble it again. Re: Losing Gas Significantly! Help!!!
yea i would definately take everything back off and seriously make sure everything is stuck together the right way and secure and then put eveyrthing back on slowly and carefully with plenty of light to see what your doing/touching/breaking/snapping/losing... lol.... good luck.. if anything take it to the stealership and get raped.

Re: Losing Gas Significantly! Help!!!
well i took apart my intake and reassembled it but it still the same freakin sound!
o2 sensor is connected
tube from intake to engine is good
airbox is in place with the throttle circle thing
airbox is connected to another big piece of thing on the left and so forth
i bolted on all 10mm as much as possible, physically.
i realized im missing a bolt and one of the bolt is not in all the way but still holds pretty firm.
im guessing its not a big deal though
i was trying to closely listen where the source is from and its somewhere around the timing belt. my friend says some cars have some type of intake that you're not suppose to take it off to and if you put it back together... it wouldnt be the same and you'll lose gas. im willing to listen to any suggestions right about now..

- Clutch slipping (MT)
- Incorrect front end alignment
Whats your reason for checking these??

meh, i only get around 20mpg in the city and my car is in near perfect shape. its just driving style. i get 42 on the highway, thats what you should go by to tell if somethings wrong. if you still get 20 on the highway, come back and we'll help you more.
alignment is important. if your wheels arent facing straight, it causes more resistance and poor mileage.

Re: Losing Gas Significantly! Help!!!
if your clutch is slipping, your on the accelerator
Front alignment issues, flat tires, etc will consume more fuel as its
resistance against the vehicle in motion.

Re: Losing Gas Significantly! Help!!!
Oh wow, I feel dumb just reading some of these posts. There is no "choke" on a fuel injected car. There is throttle control which is controlled by an electronic valve called the IACV or idle air control valve. When you switch an intake, there is no "sensor switching" that takes place. You flow more air into the manifold faster, due to less restriction but the map sensor communicates that information to the ecu automatically. There is nothing to "relearn". There is also no way to hook a laptop computer up to a stock Honda ecu. I would love to know how to do this, because if there is, I just wasted 1k on buying a kpro programmable ecu.
Seriously, this is what it sounds like to me. Your IAT sensor or intake air temp sensor isn't reading the correct temp for one reason or another. It could be unplugged from the air box and laying in the engine bay or it could be that you don't have the airbox seated on the throttle body correctly/tightly enough. This especially sounds like the case because of the whistling. There could be other issues but if you aren't seeing a CEL, that could be the cause.
