Is my clutch going?

I've got a 2001 Civic LX and I love it. However ever since I bought it, the clutch will only engage when i'm almost completely off of the pedal. Is this normal or is my clutch going out? I talked to my father who says that it should disengage closer to the floor and that I need to get my clutch adjusted. When I drive, I don't notice any slipping. I do however notice the engine hickup when I get the engine over 5000 rpms in first gear (I know that's pretty stupid but I've got to get infront of the old lady in the next lane).

A normal clutch should engage 1/4 to 1/2 of the way up. Yours sounds like it's engaging way too late. Get it re-adjusted.

Check your clutch reservoir to see if the fluid is low. And since our car has hydro clutch I don't think you can adjust it.

Get that checked out because I just changed the clutch on my 2001 Civic after only 13000 KM (8500 miles).

go into your car, take your finger, press on the pedal. How much travel is there before you meet significant resistance?
to test the clutch, find an open road, get to 40mph, shift into 2nd, pull on your parkingbrake to slow you down and floor it. If the engine makes noise (trying to accelerate) but the rpms slowly climb along with the speed, your clutch is okay. If you do this and the engine speeds way up but your still going 35mph, clutch is shot

for the free-play, if thats wrong you can adjust it. On honda's the throwout bearing begins to engage near the top of the clutch pedal's movement

Clutchs have a 30 Manufacturers defect warrantly only.. My Clutch is like that..it starts engaging about 1/2 pedal. But to be fully engaged it's almost at the top of the pedal...My Friends car car's cluctch fully engags a bit lower. The car I test drove(just to see if it was just my car) did the same as mine.. may just be an adjustment problem. Although are cars are hard on clutches because of their limited torque. My Previous cars I never had to let the clutch slip so much..ours gotta let it slip a wee bit before you fully engage the clutch otherwise it bogs..

Cheers

Interesting thread. My 2001 clutch is fine but it reminds me of my '89 Accord clutch. It didn't start to engage untile the 2/3's travel mark. I took it in three times for adjustment and each time the adjustment held for about a month and then back to the same ol shtick. I gave up and lived with it. Rest of my family absolutely hated to have to drive it tho and they all drove a good stick too.

So you too huh.. the Pedal engages quite high up... but clutch is fine..

I Liked my Hyundai Elentra I had just before my civic.. Shifter wasn't assmooth but clutch engagement was beutiful...didn't have to slip the clutch 1/10th as much to roll out.

Cheers

Thanks Mohawk. I didn't get a chance to go down to the dealor and have them check it out this weekend, but i'll try next. At least I know I'm not alone. Is there any way to get the clutch adjusted so that it engages a little closer to the floor?

the clutch in my 88 dodge omni engaged really high up on the pedal, farther up that the clutch in my civic even goes. after using that clutch for 2 years, the clutch in the civic seems to grab low
