noise from car/transmission
I just replaced the throwout bearing, input shaft bearing, oil seal, and both axle oil seals on my transmission. I put it back into my car and now when the clutch is out (engaged/disengaged?) it makes a rubbing noise. I have no idea what i could be. i just fixed the ISB in the transmission. I did notice that my clutch release fork was really lose. how lose should that be? Could that be the problem?
I hope i didnt miss anything in the transmission when i fixed all that because i dont feel like pulling it back out again. Any ideas would be great.
One last thing... im also getting new driveshafts since mine are going out.

well.... it very well could be the clutch fork... also look into the pilot bearing,.... it could be that... i have my tranny out and im replacing the bearings inside of it....
look for a post about diagnosing manual transmission noise.... it may also help you out....

Re: noise from car/transmission
yeah i read that post. Isn't the pilot bearing in the flywheel? So i would have to tear everything all the way apart again just to get to that. I might as well as just get a new clutch kit and do everything if im going to do that.
So the clutch fork shouldnt be that lose? Im guessing that the fork's spring is bad causing the throwout bearing to stay pressed up against the pressure plate which is spinning causing the rubbing noise. Thats all i can think of.
Does anyone have any other ideas. I dont want to rip apart my whole transmission again.

Re: noise from car/transmission
the fork should sit about in the middle of the hole when its resting on the throwout bearing. if you move it away it will move around a lot. It probably poped out of the tabs in the throwout bearing when you where putting the trans back in. you will probably have to seperate the engine/trans to put the fork back in again. That happened to me before... it totally sucked!
Re: noise from car/transmission
i could be that... put the car up... securely and run it through a gear or two... take a listen to see where is coming from and if it is the forks if u have the right equiptment

Re: noise from car/transmission
no i dont think the throwout bearing fell off the fork, i think the spring on the fork is bent. So i might be able to remove that and put in a new one without having to remove the transmission again.
It sounds like its coming from the back of the transmission. Unless the sound is just traveling. I dont want to split my transmission back open if i dont have too. I checked everything out when i had it split and it all looked good. the shaft wasnt bent or had no teeth grinded. i replaced the input shaft bearing and the throwout bearing. checked the gears and synchros and they were all in good shape.
Only thing I can think of is its the countershaft bearing making that noise. Either that of the clutch release fork
