2002 Civic cluster & mileage problem!

Hey guys,

I'm new here but my girlfriend has a 2002 civic. A while ago her cluster started reading all zero's in the mileage section, and the gauges stopped working (the needles would not move). I took the plastic cover off and would wiggle the connector on the cluster and it'd come back on so I am guessing it's a short somewhere in there.

We bought a used cluster off Ebay to just test the theory that it was the cluster and a month later no problems what so ever. So we do know it is 100% the cluster that is at fault.

My problem is we contacted the local honda dealership and they told me that there was no way to tap into the computer and find out what the real mileage is. That they'd just go off of whatever the old cluster said. We are trying to fix this the right way (I know on some cars you can get a sticker that states what the mileage was when the cluster was replaced and such). Eventually if she trades it in or sells it we don't want to fraud anyone. The local Honda dealership just sucks.......they had no answers besides we can sell and install a new cluster.

I am wondering what else can I do? IF the computer doesn't store the mileage and it's in the cluster do I have to send the cluster out to a speedo shop and have them find the short (or problem) and repair it? I'm thinking that's going to be as much as a new cluster but we'd like to keep the miles corrected.

Any ideas?

Yeah a lot of ppl have this problem when they change clusters. There are machines that can change the miles on the cluster, but every place that has them doesnt want to use them because they dont know if its fraud or not. If there truely is a way to not tell how many miles is on the car, then oh well- who would find out in the long run. But I understand what your saying- a sticker would be your best and only option if you dont want the old cluster in there shorting out, and if you cant find a place with one of these machines to change the mileage. You might try googling how to change the mileage yourself, it doesnt seem like that complicated of a thing, but its probably fairly difficult being its digital.

Ok I DIDNT SAY THE FOLLOWING SO PLEASE DONT GET ME IN TROUBLE ARITE ...

" I have actually heard of 5 cases in which some friends have taken their LEASED vehicles and paid like $200 to get the mileage BACKWARDS within the allowed limits before returning the lease vehicles ...

1) 98 accord coupe
2) 03 Altima 3.5 se
3) 03 Maxima SE
4) Lexus GS 300
5) Last but not least 01 Civic EX

So go to those ghetto places around town where u wud probably take a rental car to get DENTS fixed and im sure ull find someone to make it work for the NEW CLUSTER
