Oh s**t, what have I done..
Oh s**t, what have I done..
So the weather warmed up nicely today.. the streets were dry, and I found myself driving home late tonight with very little traffic other than some kid in an Olds Intrigue. To make a long race short, I took him constantly off the line until third gear off a couple of lights. We pulled up to our last light and I pushed it a little harder this time but got a great launch.. filled with satisfaction I confidently shifted into second gear. Or so I thought. In fact, I missed second, pressed down the gas anways, and redlined hard...
The car is now stuck in second gear - all I can think of is that I broke a shifting fork retainer? Can anyone confirm that this is likely, and if so.. has anyone dealt with this repair before? The car still has 20K left on the warranty, so i'd prefer to go that route.. but if they find i'm at fault then I end up paying dealer rates. Anyone with experience in this department PLEASE let me know what you think.

**Update... I guess I got somewhat lucky in that it turns out I just snapped the shift cable. The Dealer is quoting me $350 parts/labour though.. anyone else think that seems a tad high for a shift cable?

Look at the prices for parts here..
Im assuming the most expensive parts on the page are what you would need, not sure whats broken. The labor is whats killing you. IF you can change it yourself you could save a good $200-$300. For a small price I can send you the entire section of the repair manual in pdf form. pm me if interested.

My first car was an I-Mark, and it ate shift cables. I went through 3 or 4 of them. It was very easy to change, actually kept a spare in the car.
On my Civic I've replaced my shifter and the bushings where the cables meet the tranny. Both very easy to do. I'm just not sure how the cable is routed and whether it is easy to pull out/replace. From the pic it looks like once you get the cable off the shifter and the tranny, there is a screw that holds it (probably at the firewall) and then it should just pull out. Looks too easy to take it to the dealership, especially if the cable is only $70.
