mysterious rattle

does anyone have this problem? when i close either of the doors on my civic i hear this odd flapping/rattling noise that seems to come from the rear bumper area of the car towards the drivers side. i have no idea what it is. i can't seem to find what part is doing the rattling. it only does this when i close a door and all the windows are up. it also doesn't matter whether i close them softly or i slam them. it's really annoying!

if you take off your rear bumper you will find a breath hole built into the side of your car....

should that breathe-hole be making that flapping/rattling noise, though? i dunno, i'd be nice to have close the doors w/o rattling...

This may not be a solution to your problem, but I found another rattle that came from the hook (for coat hanger) found on the rear driver side. It apparently made rattle/buzz (bsr) when driving over irregular surfaces (without the radio on). My fix, simply stuff it with some bubble rap, which insulated the hook from vibrating when closed.

I had a bad rattle from the rear of my 02 ex coupe, I thought it was from the bumper and or trunk area. Turned out it was the center brake light lense was rattling against the rear deck. The dealer couldn't seem to correct the problem; even though they said they did. I ended up putting a plastic wedge against it insise my trunk, it been wonderfully quiet since.

Solar: Where exactly did you put this wedge? I have the same problem and the only temporary solution I had was to stuff some black foam between the 3rd brake light and the rear windshield... but it doesn't look too good cuz it's quite visible.

I first tried to fix it from underneath in the trunk area (like you did), but couldn't find a place where I could properly wedge something to stop the rattling.

Ronin, I got inside the trunk and stuck the wedge, (cut a piece of an old credit card and folded it to about the size of a quarter) in the metal casting slot right next to where the power cord plugs in to the 3rd brake light lense. I just wedged in in there, you can't see it from outside, but if you push it in to far, you'll lose it behind the lense and that would probably add to the rattle. Let me know how you do.

hmmm... I gonna have to look at that area again and try your solution. Thanks Solar.

Question regarding that plastic wedge you stuck in : after you stuck it in, is it lying flat, or is it vertical?

(I may not have the exact same rattle in that area though ... I have a feeling it's coming from the molding (around the 3rd brake light) rattling against the rear window.

My lense was rattling against the rear deck, when you look at the 3rd brake light lense inside the trunk you'll see where the power cord for the light enters the lense. I put the wedge between the metal rear deck hole and the lense itself. Hope maybe that clears it up, let me know.

Ok, I went out to take a look just now... You stuck your wedge in between the red plastic of the lens and the metal frame right? Right inside the hole in the metal frame where the power cord is plugged in, correct?

In that case, I don't think my rattle is coming from that part. Damn, this one is really bothering me. I've been able to fix every single rattle and keep those fixes hidden, except for this one.

well i know now that it isn't the brake light or the garment hook. i am still not sure what it is, but i'm leaning towards the breathe hole thing (again) as the culprit. it be nice to get rid of that rattle 'cause you can hear it quite well from the outside of the car when the door shuts (but not if the windows or sunroof are open). one of these days when i have some extra time, i'll see if i can do something about it.

if you don't want that flapping noise you can take off your rear bumper and on the driver side there is a black rectangle that has a flap over a hole...you can take off that flap and then no more flapping...but if you do that you might have a chance of water or something else going into the hole...

if it was me just take off the bumper and see for yourself, then you decide what you want to do about it
