Unhappy Alternator Problems

Well it looks like i am killing my alternator. Last night the 02 wouldn't start because the battery was completely toast. I purchased a new battery and it's good for the time being but the factory 70 amp alternator is running at about 60 amps and shop is saying that it is going bad. Has anyone tried having theirs rewound for more amps or purchased any aftermarket one? I am trying to get some more juice to run the system without killing the battery. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Do you have a big system? The output of alternators is generally measured around 3k rpm. Was the alternator tested at that speed? You do have the car running when the system is on correct? If you run down the battery then turn on the car and turn on your stereo that is a sure fire way to over heat your alt.
