ear piercing noise

ive only heard this noise about 3 times in the past month. I dont know what causes it. Two of the times i heard it when i was backing up. It sounds like straight metal scraping on metal, kinda like nails on a chalkboard. Once i get going it quits though. Was wonderign if anyone had any imput? I was told that when our break pads get low they scrape and make a sound similar to this, can anyone clarify? Thanks

yeah... all u need is to replace ur pads and resurface the rotors... if u are doing it ur self, take the rotors to an auto store they will resurface it for like $8 each rotor. and u can buy pads at napa as low as $20.... good luck
