flapping noise, possibly from tranny?
flapping noise, possibly from tranny?
alright well like the title says... I have a semi loud flapping type noise when the car is idle'ing (probably at higher RPM's but dont hear it due to the engine noise)
you can definately hear it from outside over the engine idle
I suspect is has something to do with the tranny because everytime I press the clutch down, the noise stops! has anyone had this problem?
what can it be?
I have not done any modification to my tranny nor engine for that fact (besides v2 intake)

looks like the curse carries over to manual tranny too. it sounds like a throwout bearing in which case you might as well replace the entire clutch. Can anyone verify this?
ive also concluded its the throwout bearing from asking a few people and searching on the forum...
It was just a sudden thing from one day to another, and Ive been driving the car smoothly lately (preserving it for once it has turbo :-p)
Ill be getting a clutch installed soon hopefully thats the problem and nothing else also
thanks for the help though gearbox, sorry to hear bout your tranny

what you are describing sounds like the input shaft bearing. I have broken 2 of these bearings.
even when your car is in neutral, the input shaft will be spinning when the clutch is engaged. So it will be making the sound. But when you push the clutch in, the input shaft stops spinning so the noise goes away.
the throwout bearing is only spinning when you push the clutch pedal in. Otherwise, the bearing isnt spinning. So it couldnt make any noise unless the pedal is pressed in (which is the opposite of what you are describing)
To fix the input shaft bearing, you have to split the case on the tranny, remove the cluster gear, replace the $23 bearing, then re-assemble the tranny.

costing me about $1060 from the shop
though the transmission casing was cracked and they also had to replace a motor mount
edit: not sure of what else it could cause...i did drive around like this for QUITE some time...like...months...i don't remember when it started...but at least like 6 months. (im a huge lagger lol)
